Description

Diversity: What Is Higher Education’s Obligation to Address Inequality in a Pluralistic World?

Given recent discussion involving admissions practices for the selection of students to colleges and universities, American society has been challenged to consider whether it has overcome an overtly discriminatory past and the effects of years of government-sanctioned inequality within its communities and institutions of higher education. What kind of liberal education is expected for students entering a society and a world where diversity is important? This session will discuss what, if any, are the public purposes and societal consequences of higher education; whether there is or should be a societal connection for Boston University students to learn; whether there is or should be a linkage between diversity and the democratic society in which the University sits; and what are the public purposes of diversity that inform our thinking about the topic at Boston University?
