TUTOR RESPONSIBILITIES

Points To Remember
  • Time sheets will be filled out at seminar every Wednesday evening. If you miss seminar, it is your responsibility to turn in your time sheet to the Program Coordinator, Room 301, 621 Comm. Ave. by noon on Thursday. Entries will be checked against the tutor sign-in sheet.

  • Paychecks are available on Friday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. from Linda
Rhodes in Room 235 of SED, 605 Comm. Ave. If you want your paycheck
deposited directly to your bank account, obtain a deposit form from the wall
pockets outside Room 301 of 621 Commonwealth Avenue (We highly recommendthis!). If you find any problems with your paychecks, speak to the Program Coordinator first.

  • Work-Study Award: If you are a tutor with a work-study award, you should
check your weekly pay stubs to ensure that you DON'T exceed your award
amount. Due to budget constraints, the ILP can't afford to pay you as a
regular student employee. You are expected to work for this project only. If
you happen to decide to have a second job, it is your responsibility to
notify us about the fact that you are working more than one job and keep
track of your earnings so that you won't be forced to quit this job before
the semester ends. Please remember that if you exceed your work-study award, you can't work for us as a volunteer. Also, be aware that each semester that you work with the ILP, you will get an automatic raise of 15 cents per hour.

  • Transportation: The learners and teachers count on you presence. If you miss the van, you are expected to get to Chelsea on your own (see the directions page). Please call Barbara Krol-Sinclair (617-889-2375) to let her know you will be late. Also, remember to report te exact hours you worked on that week's timesheet.
  • Return from Chelsea: Please make every effort to finish your tutoring promptly so that the van can leave immediately at the conclusion of classes (10:30 AM.). Some people have class right after work! When you have completed your responsibilities in your classroom, please go the children's classroom and assist the teacher and tutors there, or go to the library and help learners check out or reshelve books.
  • Absences: If you must miss a tutoring session for any reason, you are expected to: (1) find a substitute from the current tutor roster; (2) call your teacher; (3) call the Program Coordinator (3-2699) by 7:30 a.m. or the night before by 10:00 PM. If you do not speak to either your teacher or to the Program Coordinator directly, please call Barbara Krol-Sinclair (617-889-2375) in Chelsea and leave a message in her answering machine.

If you have more than two absences that are deemed "unexcused," you will be dismissed from the project.

"Excused" vs. "unexcused" absences: There are certain situations in which an absence is excused. Examples of an excused absence include: serious illness, religious holidays, and personal emergencies. Examples of an unexcused absence would include missing the van, studying for a test or exam, writing a paper, meeting with a professor, participating in a group study session, and leaving early for a holiday.

  • Seminars will begin promptly at 7:15 PM. and end by 8:30 PM, in the Metcalf Building, 635 Commonwealth Ave. Since you are being paid for your attendance, you should treat the seminars as a commitment equal to your tutoring sessions.

Please notify the Program Coordinator in advance if you will be absent from the seminar. If you miss a seminar, you should find someone who can give you the notes. As with tutoring, two unexcused absences will result in your termination from the project.

The topics for the seminar depend on tutors' and teachers' interests and participation. If there is a topic you would like to have discussed or if you would like to be part of a planning/presenting team for a certain topic, please talk with Ana Maria Chacon. We welcome tutor involvement!
  • Confidentiality: You will come to know the learners, their children and their lives in a unique way. We expect you to guard that knowledge with the respect it deserves and to confine any discussions to the context of the seminar and tutoring sessions.

If you have any concerns about the welfare of a child or adult learner, you should speak immediately to the adult teacher or to the director in the case of an adult, or to the Child Care teacher or to the Director in the case of a child.
  • BU/Chelsea Partnership: You are representatives of the Boston University community in Chelsea and your conduct is a reflection upon the project and the University. Keep this in mind and act in accordance with that responsibility.
  • Dress Code: Generally, tutors should follow the dress code of the school in which they work. Shorts, halter tops, midriffs (exposing the midsection in any way), baseball caps, ripped clothing, transparent clothing of any kind, any exposed undergarments (bras, underwear) will not be permitted. Tutors should be acutely aware of the impression they have on children - wearing neat and clean clothing (which is not revealing) shows respect for the job as well as for the children and learners.
