TUTOR JOB DESCRIPTION


Tutors will be employed a minimum of eight hours per week throughout the academic year. They will receive extensive training and support from the literacy teachers, children's classroom teacher, and coordinators during their tutoring experience.

Adult Literacy Tutors will:
  • Work with small groups of adult learners to support their reading development using a variety of instructional strategies
  • Support adult learners' daily literacy log entries and other writing through modeling and questioning techniques
  • Participate in class discussions
  • Assist the teachers with reports and records
  • Help parents with book selection in the program library
  • Support parents' use of program computers
  • Plan at least one whole-class lesson per semester
  • Participate in weekly staff development seminars at Boston University
  • Participate in an awards ceremony at the end of the year
Children's Classroom Tutors will:
  • Work with small groups of preschool- or school-aged children to support their language and literacy development using a variety of instructional strategies
  • Support children's oral language and writing through modeling and questioning techniques
  • Participate in circle time
  • Monitor children's work in activity centers
  • For school-aged children, monitor homework, support children's use of program computers, and
  • occasionally lead book discussion groups
  • Participate in weekly staff development seminars at Boston University
Tutors will work 2-4 sessions, 8:30-10:30 AM each week at the Chelsea site. Transportation is provided for morning sessions. Tutors will attend the weekly ILP seminar for all teachers and tutors held at Boston University on Wednesday evening from 7:15-8:30 PM.

Eligibility:
Graduate or undergraduate student at Boston University receiving a College Federal Work-Study award; others as needed.

Terms of Employment:
Academic Year, 8-10 hours per week Salary: For FWSP the rate is $9.00 per hour (or yearly increases as negotiated by the University and the College Federal Work-Study Program); for non-FWSP, the rate is $9.00 per hour.

Volunteers are welcomed! All volunteers must fulfill the above responsibilities, including the ILP weekly Wednesday evening seminar.
