	Research
IGSW supports and conducts research to demonstrate the effectiveness of social work interventions designed to improve the quality of lives of older people. Research Conferences and Findings IGSW will hold its first invited State-of-the- Science Conference on October 23rd and October 24th at Boston University. The primary objective of this planned series of meetings is to help develop and advance a research agenda for social work practice with frail, chronically ill older adults and their families. This first meeting will bring together a small group of important leaders and experts in the field to lay the groundwork for our first study -- a clinical trial to assess the effectiveness of a social work intervention in primary care.

	Policy
IGSW informs and seeks to influence policy makers to expand practice and reimbursement options for social work practice with older adults. Important Policy Announcements The National Leadership Coalition (NLC) is an important new initiative committed to demonstrating the value and effectiveness of social workers caring for older adults. Coalition members represent major leadership groups in practice, education and government, including NASW, CSWE, NADD, BPD, SSWR, IGSW, IASWR, ANSWER, VA, The John A. Hartford Foundation, New York Academy of Medicine, and DHHS. NLC members have identified four objectives: (1) understanding current and future supply and demand; (2) cost effectiveness of social work services; (3) translating effectiveness knowledge for practice and policy; and (4) aligning funding for social work education and training with effectiveness data.
