Staff/Postdoc Time Off
In order to request or report time off, the employee needs to submit a Time Off Request through the Employee Self-Service tab of BUWorks. Instructions on how to do so can be found here.
When you have submitted the request or reported time off (due to an unscheduled sickness), please email your supervisor. Please remember that, per BU policy, employees must request time off for scheduled medical or dental appointments at least three workdays in advance of the desired time off. Longer medical leaves (like FMLA) must be requested 30 days in advance if possible. Planned vacations should be requested at least 2 weeks in advance.
You will receive an email with the status of your request once it has been approved or rejected. If you have not seen a response, please contact your supervisor.
It is the supervisor’s responsibility to review and approve/reject employee’s time off requests through the Manager Self-Service tab or the Worklist tab. Instructions on how to do so can be found here.

How do I check my sick/vacation balance?
- Log in in to the Time Off Request page through Employee Self-Service. Your balance is listed on the bottom of this page.
I have x days of vacation accrued right now, but I need to request x+1 days of vacation a few months from now. I will have accrued x+ 3 days of vacation by the time I’m actually out. What do I do?
- You need to put request x days of paid vacation and 1 day of unpaid vacation. Once you’ve accrued the extra day (next month), you need to modify your request to be all paid. (This is Q1 in the FAQ, but it’s very poorly worded.)
I have x days of vacation accrued right now, but want to take x+1 days of vacation. What do I do?
- You need to put request x days of paid vacation and 1 day of unpaid vacation. It’s up to your supervisor whether this will be allowed. BU policy does not allow you to ever have a negative balance.
