Other Opportunities
The BU Center for the Humanities allocates funds for humanities projects and fellowships on the BU campus. We are also very interested in assisting our humanities faculty in obtaining funding from outside sources. To that end, we have created this page with the contact information for offices on campus that assist with applications for outside grants and fellowships.
Associate Dean for Humanities, Professor Patricia Johnson, has recently compiled a comprehensive list of available awards for humanities scholars, with their deadlines and criteria. Please visit this site: http://www.bu.edu/cas/research/humanities
The BU Office of Sponsored Programs:
The mission of the Office of Sponsored Programs (OSP) is to provide comprehensive support to members of the Boston University research community engaged in the preparation and submission of research proposals and the management of funded research projects. As steward of the university’s externally-funded research portfolio, OSP is responsible for ensuring that all research proposals and projects adhere to Boston University’s academic and research policies and meet its obligations to external sponsors.
OSP’s specific responsibilities include working with faculty and departments to:
- identify resources for research projects;
- review and approve all research proposals before submission to external entities;
- negotiate research agreements with external sponsors and subrecipient organizations;
- accept and manage awards for sponsored research projects; and
- maintain compliance with sponsor requirements during the life cycle of funded awards.
David Berndt is the Senior Associate Director who assists CAS/GRS Humanities faculty on Proposal Development. Tel: 617-353-4365 Email: dberndt@bu.edu
In many cases, grant proposals must be submitted through the Office of Sponsored Programs. If you are thinking of applying for a grant, please contact David Berndt.
Office of the Provost
Andrei Ruckenstein is Boston University’s Vice President and Associate Provost for Research and Julie Sandell is the Associate Provost for Faculty Development.
For faculty fellowship applications requiring official institutional nomination, an initial application must be submitted to this office rather than through the OSP.
The NEH Summer Stipends are an example of awards which require an institutional nomination. Internal Review Process: Each institution is permitted to nominate two individuals. Faculty wishing to be considered for nomination should provide the following proposal material to the University Fellowship and Scholarship Committee, Office of the Provost, 1 Silber Way (8th Floor), Boston MA 02215, for internal review purposes:
1. Letter of recommendation from the appropriate Department Chair or Research Mentor, highlighting the nominee’s achievements and the basis for selection.
2. Description of the nominee’s proposed project (maximum length 3 pages), conveying the ideas, objectives, methods, and work plan.
3. Nominee’s biographical sketch.
All nomination material should be received at the Office of the Provost by Friday, August 5, 2011.
