Exempt and Non-Exempt, Non-Represented Employees

The Performance Evaluation Policy

All vice presidents, deans, directors, department heads, managers, supervisors, administrators, and support staff will receive a written performance evaluation from their immediate supervisors at least once each year.

  • A department or school will use the University’s standardized performance evaluation program.
  • The manager/supervisor will conduct a performance evaluation meeting with each employee.
  • A written performance evaluation form will be completed for each employee and on file prior to the executive approval of the annual salary review recommendations.
  • Written performance evaluation forms will be maintained in the employee’s University personnel file.
  • An employee who would like to add comments to his or her written performance evaluation form may submit these comments in writing to his or her supervisor. These comments will become part of the employee’s University personnel file.

Performance Evaluation Schedule for Non-Represented/Non-Exempt and Exempt Employees

  • Prior to October 9, 2009: Schools and departments key administrative personnel are trained on the performance evaluation program. The Performance Evaluation forms and Training Manuals will be available on the Human Resources website at www.bu.edu/hr.
  • Prior to November 13, 2009: Supervisors will, in consultation with their Dean, Director or Department Head, complete the performance evaluation forms, meet with their employees, and forward the forms to their Dean, Director or Department Head. The merit increase process will be coordinated with the performance evaluation program.
  • Prior to December 2, 2009: The completed performance evaluation forms are submitted to Human Resources. Departments utilizing their own performance review forms are also required to submit a completed form to Human Resources.
  • January 1, 2010: Performance increases, if applicable, are effective. The increase will be reflected in the January 15, 2010 checks for non-exempt employees and in the January 29, 2010 checks for exempt employees.
