If Injured at Work (Medical Campus)

If you or a colleague is injured at work, immediate medical care is vital.

If the injury is an emergency:

  • Call the Medical Campus Public Safety Department at 617-414-4444. Then call Boston Medical Center’s Occupational & Environmental Medicine Department (BMCOEM) at 617-638-8400 to report the injury and the name of the hospital to which the employee was referred. If the injured employee is a researcher or supporting research, you must also call BU’s Research Occupational Health Program at 617-414-7647.
  • The supervisor must contact Risk Management at 617-353-3020 to report the accident and complete an Accident Report and Analysis Form.
  • If the employee receives initial treatment outside BMCOEM, he or she must schedule an appointment with BMCOEM within 24 hours after being discharged.

If the injury is not an emergency:

  • The injured employee must be evaluated at Boston Medical Center’s Occupational & Environmental Medicine Department (BMCOEM) during normal hours of operation (M–F, 7:30 a.m.–4 p.m.).
  • If the injury is research-related, the injured employee should evaluated by BU’s Research Occupational Health Program (617-414-7647).
  • Report the accident to the employee’s supervisor.
  • The supervisor must complete an Accident Report and Analysis Form within 24 hours of the accident and fax in to Risk Management at 617-353-8028.
  • Secure the accident scene.
  • If a hazardous condition exists, the supervisor should contact the Control Center at the Physical Plant and Environmental Health & Safety at 617-638-4144.
  • The accident must be analyzed by Environmental Health & Safety (EHS). You can contact EHS at 617-638-8830.
  • BMCOEM must complete an Accident Report and Analysis Form within 24 hours of the accident.
  • If the injured employee receives medical care outside the University, he or she must schedule an appointment with Boston Medical Center’s Occupational & Environmental Medicine Department or, if injury is research-related, with Research Occupational Health Program, before returning to work.
