Managing Your Staff

As a manager, you have a significant responsibility to effectively manage the people on your staff. Make sure you communicate effectively and set expectations so you can achieve your overall goals. Take the time to talk regularly with your staff, both collectively and individually.

Periodically, work-related issues will arise with members of your staff. It’s best if you address and resolve these issues in a timely and professional manner.

Each college, school, and administrative unit has an assigned Employee Relations Representative  (ERR) on the Charles River Campus and a Human Resources Consultant on the Medical Campus who can provide a wide range of services to you, including:

  • Providing advice and coaching on performance and other on-the-job problems
  • Clarification of Boston University policy
  • Compliance with laws governing employment, such as FMLA and ADA
  • Guidance in interpreting non-represented/non-exempt policies and collective bargaining agreements

For assistance with these and any other employee relations issues, you should contact your Employee Relations Representative or your HR consultant.
