“I have found everyone to be very supportive, sincere and willing to help.”

Tell us about your current role at Boston University.

My role and that of BUPD is to protect the students, faculty and staff of this university community. We do this by being a highly trained and accredited police department. We stay current on best practices in the law enforcement field and with a firm commitment to community policing.

What is your background and experience prior to working at BU?

I came to BU in May of 2017. Prior to that I was a 33 year veteran of the Boston Police Department. I started as a cadet in 1983 and worked my way up to the rank of Deputy Superintendent. As a patrol officer, I worked in the neighborhoods of Dorchester, Beacon Hill, Downtown, and Charlestown. I also had assignments in the Drug Control Unit and Youth Violence Strike Force. As a Deputy Superintendent I was responsible for the Family Justice Center which included Sexual Assault, Crimes Against Children, Domestic Violence and Human Trafficking. I also oversaw the Drug Control Unit, Special Investigations, Homicide, Crime Scene Response, and Forensics.

Tell us something about your BU experience.

What struck me immediately was the most gracious welcome I received, even before I officially started!! I received welcome emails and an incredibly warm reception as I was being introduced around campus. My philosophy of community policing and accessibility seems to blend well with the culture at BU. I have thoroughly enjoyed meeting students all across campus and have made a concerted effort to be available to them. I want students to meet BUPD during the good times, not just during difficult times.

What attracted you to BU?

I had the pleasure of staying on campus for 3 weeks back in 2011 while attending training. I really loved the vibe I got being on campus. I am a native Bostonian and LOVE this city….greatest in the world and not just for sports!! When the position of Chief of Police opened up, I enthusiastically threw my hat in the ring and am so happy to have been selected.

What would you tell someone considering a career at Boston University?

I would tell them, “You won’t regret it!” I have found everyone to be very supportive, sincere and willing to help. Everyone’s mission is to the students and it’s their energy that makes this a great and challenging environment.
