Second Qualifying Events

It is possible for your dependents to have more than one qualifying event. If a second qualifying event takes place, the maximum coverage period will be extended to 36 months, measured from the date of the first qualifying event. In order for this extension to apply, three requirements must be met:

  • The first event must be your termination of employment, reduction in work hours, or change in employment status
  • The second event must occur while your dependent is covered by continuation coverage
  • The second event must be one that extends coverage for 36 months. These include your death, divorce or legal separation, entitlement and election to participate in Medicare coverage, and a dependent child who no longer qualifies as a dependent under the terms of the health plan.
