Disability Under COBRA
If you are receiving disability benefits from the Boston University Long-Term Disability Plan, special provisions apply. Contact the Benefits Section of Human Resources for further information on these provisions.
Termination of your employment at Boston University or a change in your employment status are qualifying events. If either event occurs, you are entitled to elect to continue your coverage for up to 18 months.
If you are disabled for Social Security purposes at the time your employment terminates, you may continue your coverage for up to 29 months.
If you become disabled for Social Security purposes within the initial 18-month period of continuation coverage, your disability qualifies you to extend your coverage to 29 months from the date your employment terminated or your hours were reduced.
To extend your coverage for 29 months, you must provide the Benefits Section of Human Resources with notice of the Social Security disability determination within 60 days of the date you receive it.
In the event of your disability, after 18 months of continuation coverage, Boston University has the right to increase your required payment to 150% of the total cost for coverage for the balance of the 29-month period. Boston University may terminate your continuation coverage the month beginning at least 30 days after you are no longer disabled for Social Security purposes.
