Emergency Coverage
The BCBS PPO provides benefits for emergency medical services whether you are in or outside of Massachusetts. These emergency medical services may include inpatient or outpatient services by providers qualified to furnish emergency medical care and that are needed to evaluate or stabilize your emergency medical condition.
In a medical emergency, get the care you need immediately. A medical emergency is a condition that requires immediate medical or surgical treatment to prevent death or permanent disability. Examples of life-threatening emergencies include unusual or excessive bleeding, broken bones, acute abdominal pain, acute chest pain, suspected heart attack, burns, poisoning, unconsciousness, convulsions, or choking.
Note: When you receive emergency medical care at a non-preferred hospital emergency room, Blue Cross Blue Shield will provide the same benefits that you would normally receive if a preferred hospital emergency room had furnished the services.
Within the Enrollment Area
You will receive full coverage after a $50 copayment per person per visit for hospital emergency room treatment you receive at a hospital in the plan network. This copayment will be waived, however, if you are immediately admitted to the hospital.
