Winter Break
University residences are closed according to the following schedule:

Dormitory-style residences
Close: Noon, Tuesday, December 22, 2009
Open: 10 a.m., Friday, January 8, 2010

Students residing in dormitory-style residences who wish to remain on campus during Winter Break may apply for vacation housing.

Apartment-style residences and 33 Harry Agganis Way
All University apartment-style residences and 33 Harry Agganis Way remain open during Winter Break, when all University facilities are closed. Students assigned to apartment-style residences and 33 Harry Agganis Way who stay in their residences during this period may do so without extra charge.

Note: All University residence rules and regulations remain in effect during Winter Break. Remember, there are fewer people on campus during vacation periods: exercise caution. In case of an emergency, or to report anything suspicious, contact the Boston University Police Department directly at 617-353-2121.

Students leaving housing at the end of the fall semester because they graduate, officially withdraw, take a leave of absence, or will participate in a Boston University study abroad or internship program for the spring semester must move out and complete residence checkout procedures by noon on Tuesday, December 22, 2009.

Students leaving housing at the end of the fall semester
Your 2009–10 Residence License Agreement is a legally binding document valid for the entire academic year.

You are responsible for residence and dining plan charges for both semesters unless:

(1) You graduate at the end of the first semester and you complete the checkout procedures noted below;
(2) You withdraw or take a leave of absence from Boston University at the end of the fall semester. You must complete a withdrawal or leave of absence form at the University Service Center and complete the checkout procedures noted below; or
(3)

You petition the University Housing Committee and receive written approval from the Housing Committee for a release from the Residence License Agreement because you are leaving Boston to participate in a Boston University study abroad or internship program for the spring semester.

Checkout procedures
Simply checking out of your residence accommodation as outlined does not release you from your Residence License Agreement. You must have officially terminated your status as a student at the University or been granted a release from the Residence License Agreement by the Housing Committee because you will be participating in a Boston University study abroad or internship program for the spring semester.

Complete the checkout procedures yourself. Do not rely upon others to do any part of the process (e.g., return keys) since it is your account that may be charged. The checkout deadline for Semester I is noon on Tuesday, December 22, 2009, and all checkout procedures must be completed by that date and time. Semester II charges are adjusted based upon the effective date of your withdrawal from your residence, if you complete the checkout procedures noted below.

(1) Pick up a Checkout Room Condition Report from your residence office at least 48 hours before your departure. Complete the form, have it signed by a member of your residence staff, and return the form to your residence office. You should retain a copy of the Checkout Room Condition Report for your records.
(2) Return your residence keys, in person, to your residence office. Ask for a key receipt. If you are scheduled to leave during hours when this office is closed, make arrangements to return your keys prior to your departure. Do not give your keys to another student or a resident assistant. Do not leave with your keys. Failure to return your keys may result in your continued responsibility for Semester II residence and dining plan charges and for key/lock charges.
(3) You are responsible for removing all your belongings from your room and leaving the room in clean and usable condition. Personal property left behind is disposed of at your expense.
(4) All furniture which was in your room when you moved into it is expected to be there and arranged as you found it. Do not leave furniture in closets or outside of your room. Charges are assessed for missing and/or damaged furniture at replacement costs. If there is excess furniture in common areas, closets, or student rooms, you will be assessed a removal fee. If the room has to be set up, there is a fee charged to arrange the furniture.
(5) If you were assigned to a dormitory-style residence or to 10 Buick Street or to 33 Harry Agganis Way, you must complete a mail forwarding/change-of-address card at your residence mail room. If you were assigned to an apartment-style residence (other than 10 Buick Street or 33 Harry Agganis Way), complete a change-of-address form online at www.usps.com.
