Gender-Neutral Housing Room Selection Overview

Students will select gender-neutral rooms, suites and apartments in the normal context of the Room Selection process. The process will proceed as follows:

Same Room

Students living in eligible suites, apartments and rooms will have the opportunity to choose their same room for next year.  In the Fall Housing Reservation students will be able to reserve their same room and indicate the remaining spaces can become gender-neutral.  We encourage current roommates to communicate with each other about their plans to avoid confusion.

Same Room with Pull-In

Students currently living in eligible suites, apartments and rooms will have the opportunity to choose the “same room with pull-in” option during the Fall Housing Reservation process. Students being pulled-in may be of the opposite gender. In units with more than one bedroom or in triple or quad occupancy bedrooms, all members of the unit or room must agree to a gender-neutral assignment. If all members do not agree, then the pull-in is voided and the unit or room is returned to single gender. All assignable spaces within the unit or room must be filled during the Same Room selection process if the students want the unit or room to be gender-neutral.

There is no limit to the number of rooms, suites or apartments that can be selected as gender-neutral during the Same Room process.

Internal and Community Selection

During the Internal and Community Room Selection periods, BU Housing will designate a minimum of 30 bed spaces as gender-neutral. These spaces will be across the residence system and will be representative of the various room types on campus. These spaces are in addition to the rooms selected as gender-neutral during the Same Room process.

Mixed gender groups can only select these units/rooms and all assignable spaces within the units/rooms must be filled. All usual rules and procedures for Internal and Community selection apply.
