Leaving For Study Abroad

Fall semester
Before leaving, students who have been accepted to Boston University study abroad or internship programs and who have submitted a Housing Reservation for the upcoming academic year must either:

  • complete a housing cancellation form in person at BU Housing, 25 Buick Street, or,
  • send written notice of cancellation to:

    Boston University Housing
    25 Buick Street
    Boston, MA 02215

Letters should be mailed by certified, registered, or express mail, with a return receipt request.

Students must submit a copy of the notification of their acceptance into their fall semester study abroad or internship programs. They must complete this process prior to the fall semester housing cancellation deadline published in the Terms and Conditions of the Residence License Agreement.

The housing guarantee payments students submit as part of their Housing Reservation will be transferred to a tuition deposit for the fall semester.

Spring semester
If assigned to on-campus housing during the fall semester, students who have been accepted to Boston University study abroad or internship programs for the spring semester must either:

  • complete a Housing Committee Petition form at BU Housing, 25 Buick Street, or
  • send a letter of petition to:

Boston University Housing

Letters should be mailed by certified, registered, or express mail, with a return receipt request.

In their petitions, students should request release from their academic year Residence License Agreement for the spring semester, and with their petition they must submit a copy of the notification of their acceptance into the spring semester study abroad or internship programs. They should complete this petition process as soon as they receive their acceptance letters.

Students leaving for spring semester Boston University study abroad or internship programs must move out of their on-campus residences and complete the checkout procedures prior to the end of the fall semester.

Students' Boston University student accounts will continue to reflect on-campus residence and dining plan charges until they complete these checkout procedures. However, students may deduct these charges from the amounts they remit to settle their student accounts by the settlement deadline. Students should list the deductions in the appropriate place on their invoice stubs.
