Timothy P. Kirwan, Managing Director of the InterContinental luxury property located on Boston’s waterfront, brings more than 27 years of experience and distinguished achievement in the hospitality industry.
No stranger to Boston, Mr. Kirwan has been the sure guiding hand behind the openings of the Hotel Commonwealth, the Cambridge Hyatt Regency and the Bostonian Hotel, which he served as Managing Director from 1982 – 1990.
As Managing director of Hotel Commonwealth he created a new destination in Kenmore Square which included thirteen boutique stores, the award wining Great Bay Restaurant with Michael Schlow and Chris Myers, as well as Eastern Standard Brasserie.
He was the General Manager of the 364-room Westin Hotel in Providence, which he also opened and managed with distinction and national acclaim for seven years. In addition, he is deservedly credited with playing a key role in the re-birth of the city of Providence, both through his service as chairman of the Providence Convention and Visitors Bureau, as well as for garnering positive exposure for the city as chairman of the Providence Film Commission.
Mr. Kirwan started in the hospitality industry as manager of the Last Hurrah in Boston’s Parker House. Three years later he joined Hotels of Distinction and went on to facilitate the transition of the Sheraton Hotel and it’s re-opening as the Copley Plaza Hotel. In 1976 he joined the Hyatt Hotels Corporation where, within a six-year span, he served as regional food and beverage director in the company’s hotels in Cambridge, Massachusetts, Lexington, Kentucky, and San Francisco, California. Between his service at the Bostonian and the Providence Westin, Mr. Kirwan ventured on his own as principal in Signature Concepts International and Braur Management/Monarch Hotels firms providing consulting, development, and management service for hotels, resort communities and luxury residences worldwide.Throughout his career, Mr. Kirwan has received recognition from his peers and industry observers. More recent recognitions include AAA 4-Diamond Hotel awards for the Hotel Commonwealth and the Westin in Providence.
Widely respected for his commitment and expertise of the hospitality industry, Mr. Kirwan has many professional affiliations including Chairman of the Providence Warwick Convention and Visitors Bureau, and has served as President of the Greater Boston Hotel Association, and Greater Boston CVB Board currently.
Currently Mr. Kirwan is on the Board of SKAL, New England, Board of Overseers, Dartmouth College, member of Chaine des Rotisseurs, and the Board of the Greater Boston CVB.
