Academic, social and professional networking opportunities

Some of the School’s academic, social, and professional networking opportunities include:

Hospitality House Approximately thirty students each year enjoy living in Hospitality House, a completely renovated one-hundred-year-old townhouse on beautiful Bay State Road. This attractive coed brownstone features beautifully appointed common areas with Oriental rugs and tiled fireplaces. Residents regularly use its professional kitchen to host dinner parties and cooking classes or to prepare meals for themselves.

Peer Advising This program was established to provide a personal network between upperclassmen and new students. Peer advisors serve as orientation guides to freshmen and transfer students, providing information about academic offerings, class registration, student organizations, and industry events.

Coffee Break A weekly informal gathering, bringing together faculty, staff, students, and the dean to openly talk about issues related to the School, the University, and the hospitality industry — and as the name implies, coffee and snacks are available, prepared by the Fundamentals of Food Service class earlier in the day.

The Distinguished Speakers Series This one-credit lecture series, offered to all Hospitality Administration students each semester, invites industry leaders chosen by the faculty, administration, and Advisory Board to speak on a common theme throughout the semester. After the lecture, students are invited to an informal reception to meet the guest speaker.

Eta Sigma Delta The international honor society for students studying hospitality management. The society was established to encourage and reward outstanding academic achievement. Membership is limited to juniors and seniors who rank in the top 20 percent of their graduating class with a GPA of 3.0 or higher.

The SHA Student Government coordinates many events within the School of Hospitality Administration and represents the School as part of the larger Boston University Student Government. Special events include hosting the Spring Picnic and coordinating the annual trip to the New York Hotel/Motel and Restaurant Show. The SHA Student Government also publishes the School’s newsletter, The Hospitality Journal.

Diner’s Club Students meet regularly to dine at different restaurants in the Boston area. They enjoy a full-course meal at a reduced price, a tour of the establishment, and an insider’s look at the field from one of the restaurant’s managers.

The National Society of Minorities in Hospitality (NSMH) This non-profit, student-run professional organization works with hospitality professionals to establish a working relationship between the hospitality industry and minority students. The group holds an annual conference in a different location every year, and members can participate in career and networking workshops, lectures, and job interviews with prospective employers.

Boston University Meeting Professionals SHA’s newest club is dedicated to fostering relationships between industry professionals and students pursuing careers in event and meeting planning. The group meets regularly to network and discuss trends, internships, and career possibilities.
