Profile: Caroline Lee, Senior
Caroline serves as president of the Boston University chapter of the National Society of Minorities in Hospitality (NSMH). Monthly meetings are held at different Boston hotels, where a hotel manager talks about his or her role in the business and gives students a tour. Then, they settle down in one of the lounges or meeting rooms to talk about NSMH business. This month, they’re at the exclusive XV Beacon Hotel, voting in a new president.
“I really wanted to make a difference wherever I went to school. I knew that the School of Hospitality Administration would be small enough for me to jump in and start something worthwhile and lasting. Last year, with academic support from the administration and financial support from an advisory board member, I attended the NSMH annual conference in Miami to learn more about organizing a chapter here. In February, the new Boston University chapter had the largest representation at the annual conference in Las Vegas, and we won the Best New Chapter award. All of the seniors present were able to interview with NSMH sponsor companies like Hyatt, ARAMARK, Disney, and Maritz Travel, and two of them were hired on the spot. Not all of our members are minorities, but all of them support diversity in the hospitality industry. I think that says a lot about the enthusiasm and commitment of the students here at SHA.”
