Is glamping a fad or here to stay? Peter Mack, former Starwood executive and now co-founder and owner of Collective Retreats, thinks the combination of rural locations without lacking luxury amenities, unique experiences for customers, and being an asset-light company has all the makings for start-up success. Mack launched Collective Retreats, a pop-up glamping company that only owns its tents, not land, in 2014; the company currently has lodging locations in Yellowstone, Vail, Sonoma, Hudson Valley, and Hill Country outside of Austin, TX.

In a recent Skift article, Dr. Makarand Mody commented on what he thinks is working well for Collective Retreats and the glamping sector in addition to what hurdles they may encounter in the lodging industry.

“They’ve taken the idea of glamping and added their own touches to it to try and tap into what the modern traveler is seeking out in terms of a travel experience — the various dimensions of the travel experience such as novelty/surprise, localness, community, escapism, aesthetics, and entertainment,” Mody  said. “I feel like the concept probably is and will continue to have some initial traction. However, it’s keeping up the momentum in terms of the scalability of the concept both from a supply and demand perspective that is going to be a challenge.”
