Jon H. Roberts





A noted authority on Darwinism and American thought, Jon Roberts is Professor of History at Boston University. Previously he held positions in the history departments of the University of Wisconsin-Steven Point and Harvard University. His Darwinism and the Divine in  America: Protestant Intellectuals and Organic Evolution, 1859-1900 (University of Wisconsin Press, 1988) won the Frank S. and Elizabeth D. Brewer Prize from the America Society of Church History. He is co-author (with James Turner) of The Sacred and the Secular University (Princeton University Press, 1900). He has contributed chapters to many books and articles for a variety of reference works and journals. He is working on a book-length manuscript on “Protestantism and the Mind, 1840-1940” and a long-range project on “Secularization in America.” Roberts received his B.A. from the University of Missouri in 1969, his A.M. from the Harvard University 1970, and his Ph.D. from Harvard University in 1980.
