Recently Marriott Hotels experienced a data breach of 500 million accounts. This news was covered in a BU Research magazine article (December 5, 2018) where Hariri Institute for Computing Founding Director Azer Bestavros was interviewed. “We are in a [cyber] arms race right now,” he stated. “Hackers are becoming more sophisticated against an industry that is refusing to do it right.” Later in the article, he went on “What that means is, society needs to be willing to make cybersecurity a top priority and find ways to stop these massive breaches from happening in the first place, rather than reacting with patches each time a new one occurs, they will simply keep on coming”. Julissa Milligan, who is a member of the Hariri Institute for Computing’s Cyber Alliance, concluded the article by mentioning how the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) is trying to communicate that the issue is a huge problem and that it’s difficult to develop a one size fits all solution.
