A Crash Course in Data Encryption: Concepts, Techniques, Limitations, and Unrealized Potential (Part II)

12:45 pm to 2:00 pm on Monday, October 2, 2017
765 Commonwealth Avenue, Room 410
This talk, a continuation of one held in July and part of an ongoing collaboration with the Hariri Institute of Computing, is aimed at a non-technological academic audience that is interested in understanding the concept of data encryption, with its many facets. The talk will be led by Prof. Ran Canetti, the Director of the Center for Reliable Information Systems and Cyber Security (RISCS). In Part I, Prof. Canetti presented the basic principles and mathematical concepts underlying data encryption, as well as some basic algorithms. In this talk, he will review the material covered in Part I, and then will present some of the more modern and “fancy” types of encryption that open the door to completely new forms of protected interaction between mutually distrustful entities.Throughout the talk Prof. Canetti will also discuss the legal and public-policy aspects of the technology, representing the promise as well as the inherent challenges. It is not necessary for you to have been present at the first talk to enjoy this one. Lunch will be provided. If you’d like to attend, please send your RSVP to tgabs@bu.edu.
