Institute Director to Speak at Information Technology and Innovation Foundation Event in Washington, D.C.

Azer Bestavros, Hariri Institute Founding Director and Professor of Computer Science, will be a panelist at “The Cities of Tomorrow: How Research and Innovation Can Help Address the U.S. Infrastructure Crises” event, to be held in Washington, D.C. on October 27th. Hosted by the Information Technology and Innovation Foundation (ITIF), the event will discuss research and innovation that has the potential to advance federal policies for smart and connected communities.

Smart technologies are rapidly changing U.S. cities. For example, dynamic road pricing, real-time transit information, and vehicles with increased autonomy will soon revolutionize the way people move around cities. Yet even though the growing Internet of Things offers enormous benefits, U.S. metropolitan areas are experiencing mounting problems related to congestion, grid security, and outdated or inadequate roads, bridges, and water supply networks. Therefore, any future investments by the new Administration and Congress on America’s aging infrastructure should be focused on “smart infrastructure.” (itif.org

Other speakers include Elizabeth Grossman, Director of Civic Projects, Technology and Civic Engagement Group at Microsoft, and Lauren Lockwood, Chief Digital Officer for the City of Boston. The pane will be moderated by Daniel Castro, ITIF Vice President.
