During the last five years, Mr. Phomkong has worked as a consultant in private sector development, particularly in improving financial access by micro and small enterprises. He worked with important international financial institutions, such as the World Bank and Asian Development Bank (ADB) in the coordination of Lao Government agencies, including the Bank of Laos (the nation’s central bank) and the Ministry of Commerce and Industry. Along with his main job, he has also worked as a visiting lecturer at a private business school in microeconomics and international business and as a staff trainer at three state-owned commercial banks on bank marketing.
In 2002, as a consultant to the World Bank in Vientiane, Mr. Phomkong provided direct assistance to the Rural and Micro Finance Committee (RMFC) in the Bank of Laos in formulating the first national policy statement on the development of the rural and micro-finance sector, which was successfully completed and approved by the Lao Government in November, 2003.
Mr. Phomkong obtained his bachelor's degree in pharmacy at Lao National University before getting his first master’s degree in Business Administration from the Asian Institute of Technology in Thailand. He earned a second master’s degree in Innovation and Entrepreneurship from the European School of Management (ESCP-EAP) in Paris.
During his Humphrey Program at Boston University, Mr. Phomkong will learn about the U.S financial system and its legal structure, particularly in the area related to micro and small enterprises. In addition, he also intends to strengthen his knowledge of entrepreneurship during his year at Boston University. |
