Congratulations Dr. V. Shubhalaxmi, 2009/10 Humphrey Alumna from India

July 28th, 2011

The Humphrey Fellowship Program at Boston University would like to congratulate Dr. V. Shubhalaxmi on her discovery of a new species of moth in India.

Ziro_moth

This moth was photographed by a school teacher from Arunachal Pradesh, India and was submitted for identification purposes. After extensive research, a moth specialist from Taiwan confirmed this to be a new species.

Shubha has planned a survey to locate a specimen for research purposes in Arunachal Pradesh this upcoming September. Since specimens cannot be sent outside of India, the Taiwanese expert will be joining Dr. Shubhalaxmi on her survey.

This is Shubha’s first official entomological expedition. If she is successful in locating a specimen she will have the opportunity to name the moth; the location where it was first found is known as Ziro so she intends to name it as such.

Dr. Shubhalaxmi has also been tasked with developing a full fledged three year butterfly and moth research project for Arunachal Pradesh, marking the beginning of her career in research.

We are so proud of your accomplishments Shubha and look forward to many more wonderful discoveries.
