Mr. Julio Canelo has been teaching EFL/ESL for ten years; for the last five, he has worked for the Ministry of Education of Nicaragua, where he is currently head of the English language commission for the National Curriculum. His main duties include designing the English language curriculum and supervising its implementation nationally.
Previously, Mr. Canelo was appointed as the counterpart by the Ministry of Education to collaborate with the Peace Corps’ TEFL Project; he served in this capacity for two years. Mr. Canelo is also actively involved in the Books in the Box project sponsored by the American Embassy in Nicaragua, the Association of Nicaraguan English Teachers, and the Ministry of Education. As a part of this collaboration, over the last two years Mr. Canelo coordinated and organized numerous training workshops to benefit more than one thousand English teachers in Nicaragua. The Books in the Box project also provided teaching materials for three hundred secondary schools in Nicaragua, benefiting more than seven hundred English teachers.
Mr. Canelo has a bachelor’s degree in English language education with a specialization in curriculum design.
During the Humphrey Fellowship Program, Mr. Canelo will enhance his professional skills and contact educational professionals in an effort to improve the overall conditions of English teachers in Nicaragua. |
