The Society of Fellows, which began in September 1984, serves as a forum for research, debate, and public dialogue among humanities faculty from different disciplines and between junior and senior faculty. The Society is intended to assist young scholars in the development of their careers and to take up the larger questions of culture and imagination that the humanities have always examined. Each year approximately five Junior Fellows are elected to the Society of Fellows and Foundation support makes it possible for them to be released from teaching for one semester and thus to have more time to devote solely to research. The distinguished senior faculty who are invited to join them as Senior Fellows receive a research stipend.
