Peer Educator Training Sites (PETS) Evaluation
HDWG, under contract with Health
Watch Information and Promotion Service, Inc. recently completed a multi-site
evaluation of peer educator training programs, funded by the Health Resources
and Services Administration under the Minority AIDS Initiative. PETS programs
operated by The AIDS
Foundation, Houston, Inc. (TX), Circulo
de la Hispanidad, Inc. (NY), Duke
University Medical Center (NC) and the Shanti
California Peer Educator Project (CA) participated in this initiative
and the evaluation. The PETS developed curricula to train peers and near-peers
to work in their communities to bring high-risk individuals into counseling
and testing and to provide support, advocacy and care to people living with
HIV.

A new round of PETS programs and an evaluation of these programs began in
September 2005. Under this 5 year initiative PETS will train peers who are
living with HIV to work in care and treatment settings. In addition, the
PETS will provide training to Ryan White CARE Act grantees, clinics, AIDS
Services Organizations and training organizations to establish new peer
programs within their organizations, support and supervise the peers who
work or volunteer for their organizations and establish their own peer educator
training programs. HDWG, again working with HealthWatch Information and
Promotion Services, Inc. as the Resource and Evaluation Center, will coordinate
and implement the multi-site evaluation. PETS organizations funded in this
round include the Center for Health Training (Oakland, CA), Harlem Hospital
(NYC) and the American Red Cross St. Louis Chapter.
