The
software product that launched HPR in 1987 was based on the cost containment
methodologies developed by HCEP staff in their work with corporate medical
departments. CodeReview® produces savings for insurance companies and
managed care organizations by electronically editing physicians' bills utilizing
criteria for clinical appropriateness and billing accuracy. Dr. Richard
Egdahl founded HPR with Marcia Radosevich, an HCEP-affiliated entrepreneur
who was the founding chief executive officer of the company. HCEP senior
consultant, Cynthia Taft, served as Director of New Product Development
at HPR.
HPR expanded its product lines to include twelve software products, all
focused on managing costs or improving quality of care. The company completed
two public offerings in 1995 and 1996 and, in 1996, ranked number 11 on
Business Week's annual list of the top 100 "Hot Growth Companies".
HPR's customer base grew to 400 insurers and managed care organizations,
with revenue of $39 million, when it was acquired by HBOC (now McKesson)
in 1997.
