The International Students and Scholars Office

ISSO has responsibility for providing information, counsel and assistance in all matters related to the immigration, academic activities and the employment of international students and scholars at Boston University. The ISSO also performs complex immigration processing and maintains compliance with various federal regulations regarding the studies and employment of foreign nationals.

ISSO serves approximately 4,500 international students and 1,200 international scholars on both the Charles River Campus and the Medical Campus. The office facilitates the work of Boston University faculty and administrators who are responsible for advising and assisting international students. It also works with department administrators and faculty who invite international professors, researchers and visitors to campus, by performing immigration processing to facilitate teaching, research and employment objectives. The office also assists in the immigration processing of graduate and non-degree admissions.

Any department or individual wishing to invite a foreign national to Boston University, whether for purposes of observation, consultation, lecturing, or employment, should consult in advance with the ISSO staff. This is especially important for situations in which the individual will be reimbursed for expenses or paid an honorarium or salary. Faculty appointments and six months advance notice may be required for some types of visa and immigration processing.

The ISSO is also charged with completing the I-9 Employment Eligibility Verification form at the start of employment for all international students, scholars, and temporary employees of Boston University. All international employees should report to the ISSO to complete the paperwork for payroll purposes no later than by the third day of employment. Please refer to the ISSO website for specific details.

ISSO staff participate in new student and scholar orientation. They offer information and advice to international students, scholars, and their dependents on a broad range of matters which relate to their stay in the United States, including housing, cultural adjustment, finances, employment, taxes and travel.
