Center for Excellence in Teaching (CET)

Mission

  • promote and support exemplary teaching
  • facilitate the continued professional development of faculty as teachers
  • introduce new faculty to the culture of excellence in teaching at Boston University

The Center for Excellence in Teaching (CET) provides a forum for the discussion of the knowledge, tools, and spirit of inquiry that are central to the teaching and learning processes. The Center cultivates teachers who are able to share their own passion for an area of scholarly inquiry and curiosity about what remains to be discovered. It encourages teachers to motivate students to participate actively in their own education and to guide them on their way to becoming life-long learners.

The Center promotes excellence in teaching by:

  • assisting and supporting both new and established faculty members in their role as teachers;
  • facilitating the appropriate use of new technologies in classrooms and laboratories;
  • refining methods, instruments, and procedures for the evaluation of teaching;
  • working with the administration to improve the teaching infrastructure in classrooms and laboratories;
  • providing feedback on classroom performance through videotaping, observing, and mentoring.

The CET offers a range of resources to enhance faculty teaching. Workshops, seminars, consultations, and technological support, as well as a collection of audio, video, and print materials are available for all instructional personnel. The center maintains a website, at which faculty, teaching fellows, and others interested in the teaching mission of Boston University can find information about the CET and its activities. The website also contains valuable resources and links in support of teaching.
