Maternity Leave
In the event of childbirth or adoption, a faculty woman may wish to take leave from some or all of her professional duties for a period of time. Concerning on-campus responsibilities, especially the teaching and academic advising of students, the University will provide coverage, at the faculty member’s request, for a period of up to three months. The individual’s Department Chair will be responsible for reassigning teaching duties to other qualified staff; any costs resulting from these reassignments will be funded by the individual’s School or College. Normal salary payments will be continued during this period.
(For any period of medical disability relating to pregnancy or childbirth, leave with pay is available under and subject to the terms and conditions of eligibility and benefits of the Faculty Temporary Disability Policy and the University’s long-term disability plan.)
* School of Medicine faculty who participate in a practice plan do not receive benefits provided under the Faculty Handbook but instead receive benefits (including maternity leave, temporary disability leave and sabbatical leave) in accordance with the benefit plans adopted by their practice plans and approved by the Faculty Practice Foundation, Inc.
