University Professors Program

The University Professors Program (UNI) is a separate college of Boston University that grants bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral degrees in fields that extend, modify, or link established academic disciplines and in which students, consulting closely with faculty advisors, design their own cross-disciplinary programs of study.

During the freshmen and sophomore years, one-half of the student’s class schedule is devoted to core courses in the areas of literature; culture, history and society; and science. The remainder of the schedule consists of a foreign language course and an elective from any school or college of the University. During the junior and senior years, with the guidance of their advisors, students design a program of study consisting of courses offered in any school or college which will reflect their intellectual interests.

In the senior year, students are required to write and orally defend a Senior Thesis. The title of the degree is chosen with the advice and approval of the faculty advisor and the director of the University Professors Program. Students must maintain a 3.5 grade point average to remain in the Program.

The graduate program is designed for a select group of outstanding students whose educational background, aptitude, motivation and promise warrant the creation of individual programs of study. Each candidate is assigned an advisor who is familiar with the general area of the student’s intended research. The advisor helps the student plan a schedule of academic work, based largely on the original proposal submitted with the application for admission. Course schedules are comprised of courses offered by any school or college of the University with the consent of the advisor. A master’s thesis or doctoral dissertation is required of all students for higher degrees. Candidates for doctoral degrees are required to take Comprehensive Examinations before writing a dissertation.
