Partners in Health (PIH) informed us late Wednesday that so far, the University’s collective Haiti fundraising efforts have raised $7,378! That is just about one-third of our $25,000 goal.
Our fundraising so far has come from some outstanding student organization iniatives, such as Carnival, Harmonies for Haiti, and donation baskets at various events.
You can see our regularly updated “fund-raising thermometer” here. If this motivates you to help us meet our goal, please use the orange fundraising button to the right of this post to donate.

During Sunday’s event, representatives of the United States Army stationed in Haiti will video conference into the Metcalf Ballroom to give an idea of the situation as it currently stands in the country. The representatives will be available for a limited question and answer session following.
This opportunity to hear what help is needed live from the ground in Haiti will take place at 4pm on Sunday. Special thanks to the Army ROTC for helping make these arrangements! Watch the site for more announcements regarding this live Haiti check-in.

Many talented painters, singers, stage designers, and musicians from CFA are now donating their time and creativity to help us make history with this event. As of now, there will be a performance by All-Campus Choir and CFA’s student choir who are working together to make this a musical and memorable occasion. Also, CFA students who are Visual Arts majors will be painting portraits at the fashion show, and sharing their pieces in the silent auction, along with helping to set up the stage to make a real impact by helping us display’s Haiti’s culture in a colorful and beautiful way.

Last night’s show at the Middle East Downstairs had a great turnout and everyone involved is excited to announce: We raised over $1300! And that’s not including the sales of the live art that was auctioned off after the show. The same generous sponsor who has agreed to match all proceeds from B.U.-related Haiti relief efforts will be matching the proceeds of the concert, so that means we raised a total of over $3000 for Partners in Health.
Thank you to everyone who attended the show and to the artists and performers who were a part of the memorable event.

As of yesterday, there are exactly 4 weeks until the big event!
Partners is Health is very excited to be on board as the charity we’ll be supporting and they’ve made it easy for us to track our fundraising efforts on their community building site. Join the group we’ve created to see a visual record of our donations and watch the thermometer fill up as we work to reach our goal of $25,000.
As for the quilt project, individuals can buy a square to decorate for $5 and student organizations and clubs can buy a square for $30 at the link tables in the G.S.U. during the week of February 10-16. We will then stitch together the squares into one beautiful piece of art that will show the people of Haiti how B.U. is standing with them during the disaster and supporting them throughout their recovery.
Keep reaching out to businesses and any celebrities you can get in touch with to collect items for the silent auction that you think people would like to bid on.
Also, if you have any artifacts, photos, documents, or art that you’d like to contribute to the museum exhibit, please turn them in by Monday, February 22.
The next meeting will be this Thursday at 8:30p.m.

Though the exact date has not been finalized, the HCA has scoped out a venue and booked a spot for the big event, which will take place in February, within one month of the earthquake, in Metcalf Hall. Following Friday’s meeting, we’re excited to present some of the decisions we’ve reached so far about the event, which will bring together B.U. students and the larger community of Boston for a unified cultural experience.
Attendees can expect to immerse themselves in Haitian culture from the second they walk in.
Haiti Kanaval 2009
There will be traditional Haitian cuisine catered by local Haitian restaurants, along with performances, guest speakers, and a chance to learn a Haitian dance. The event will be a celebration of and introduction to a country that might seem mysterious to us. Guests can see what Haiti was like before the earthquake, and learn from guest speakers, and professors what the earthquake means for the future of Haiti.
Also, for anyone interested in a more in-depth understanding of Haiti’s economy, politics, and culture both before and after the earthquake, there will be a forum concurrently taking place in a separate room adjacent to Metcalf Hall intended to educate and enlighten.
Just to show you how much of an occasion this is going to be, an anonymous donor has already agreed to match our donation to Partners in Health, with a donation of up to $25,000 and 200 volunteers have already signed up to help!
