| Finding
Housing
Incoming students should begin
their search for an apartment or other suitable
housing as soon as possible after admission
to the Graduate School. But don't panic:
Many new graduate students arrive in Boston
in late August and are still able to locate
a room in an apartment. If you're arriving
from another country, make sure to attend
the relevant orientation program(s), at
which you will receive information on available
apartments and will be given time to search
for housing.
Boston is a wonderful city, and its desirability
creates a very tight housing market, which
in turn leads to rents that may be higher
than what you are accustomed to paying.
Boston University's Office of Housing is
unable to offer any graduate on-campus dormitory-style
housing for the upcoming academic year,
but the resources listed below can assist
you in your housing search. Pay particular
attention to the procedures: Are utilities
included in the rent? What are the up-front
costs (security deposits, realtors' fees,
etc.)? What are the requirements of the
lease? You should arrive in Boston aware
of these considerations and prepared to
deal with them.
Most graduate students choose
to live in apartments located off campus.
When conducting your search, you may choose
to focus on the Boston neighborhoods nearest
to campus: Allston/Brighton, the Fenway,
and the Back Bay. Neighboring towns in close
proximity to campus include Cambridge, Brookline,
and Newton.
The
Office of Orientation and Off-Campus Services
can help
you in your search for housing and in all
other aspects of your transition to Boston
University. The office can also be reached
by telephone at 617-353-3523 or by mail
at Off-Campus Housing, George Sherman Union,
Boston University, 775 Commonwealth Avenue,
Boston, MA 02215 U.S.A.

Other rental opportunities
are managed by the Office
of Rental Property Management,
located at 19 Deerfield Street (617-353-4101),
which offers University-owned apartments
in various neighborhoods. Of particular
interest is a new, luxury-style apartment
building at 580 Commonwealth Avenue available
exclusively for full-time graduate students.
