Joseph Finkhouse

As Associate Director of Health, Safety, and Security, Joe Finkouse is responsible for developing and coordinating University policy on health, safety and security for BU students, faculty and staff traveling abroad for any University-sponsored or sanctioned activity. In this role Joe works with researchers, trip leaders, travelling staff, students and student organizations to assess risk for proposed travel, develop risk management plans for overseas activities, and lead emergency response when needed.

Joe was appointed to Global Programs in July 2011 and has been at BU since 1999 in various roles within BU Study Abroad, including responsibility for overseeing the health, safety, and security matters for our BU Study Abroad programs as well as oversight of Study Abroad marketing and recruiting and relations with the many colleges and universities sending students on BU Study Abroad programs. Before coming to BU he taught English at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, and worked in the state humanities councils of Nevada and Rhode Island. Joe has been active in several national study abroad organizations including NAFSA and the Forum on Education Abroad as an officer, committee chair, advisor, and speaker, as well as co-authoring a NAFSA publication on management of study abroad programs.

Joe is a graduate of Michigan State University and received a PhD in Comparative Literature from Brown University. His own international experience includes a Fulbright Grant to Colombia and several study abroad experiences in France and Mexico.
