Heather Barclay Hamir

Dr. Heather Barclay Hamir serves as executive director of Study Abroad, a division of Global Programs. She joined BU in April 2014 to lead the day-to-day operations and develop strategies and programming which continue to build on BU’s longstanding excellence in study abroad.
Heather joined BU from The University of Texas at Austin, where she served as director of Study Abroad for six years. During her tenure, UT Austin rose from seventh to the second in the nation for the number of students studying abroad, and oversaw support and programming for over 3,300 students per year in both credit- and non-credit bearing activities. She has participated in various national boards committed to furthering the quality and participation in international education. Currently, she serves on the Forum Council of the Forum on Education Abroad and is a member of the Board of Directors of the Fund for Education Abroad.
Heather has been an active leader in national discussions about how to increase access to study abroad. At UT Austin, she successfully secured $450,000 in grant and scholarship funding to support student participation. In 2014, the University received both NAFSA’s Senator Paul Simon Spotlight Award and Diversity Abroad’s Excellence in Diversifying International Education Institutional Award in recognition of the work carried out under her leadership to promote equal access to study abroad opportunities among a highly diverse student population. Based on research she conducted in 2011, Heather also led one of the first programs in the nation to pilot study abroad programming as a retention tool.
Before joining UT Austin in 2008, Heather was the director of Study Abroad & Exchange Programs at Central Washington University, where she began her efforts to expand student participation to underserved populations. Heather received her PhD from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, an MS and MA from Oregon State University, and her BA cum laude from Pomona College.
