Event Host:
Global Public Health Brigades / Mexican Students Association / Phi Iota Alpha Fraternity, Alianza Latina / Students Helping Honduras / Operation Smile

A celebration of Latin American culture as well as information on Global Brigades and its chapters and the incredible impact they have in Honduras and Panama. The night will also include Latin American musicians from the Boston area and Central American food from East Boston restaurants. Co-hosting the event will be various groups that have a particular focus in Latin America (Mexican Students Association, Phi Iota Alpha Fraternity, etc.) and Global Brigades chapters, whose organization focuses on holistic development projects in rural communities, and with Organización Dominicana de Recursos Internacionales (ODRI), a non-profit organization with a vision to improve lives of those in need by serving and directing resources in the communities of the Dominican Republic with excellence and joy.

The headlining band of the night will be Rumberos de Boston (a.k.a. Rumberos de Massachussetts). They are a trio of untamable voices — two wild guitars and mesmerizing percussion, born in the streets of Boston. A combination of Latin rock, Blues, Huapango & Reggae that echoes and reprises tradition and music, new and old, the band’s music focuses on celebrating life with joy. Rumberos have performed all over the world, from Boston to Mexico, Latvia to Madrid and even as far as Moscow.

Kicking off the event, will be the 2013-2014 Hubert Humphrey Fellows, who have composed a song to the tune of Ben E. King's 1961 rhythm and blues hit, "Stand By Me," which conveys their appreciation for being selected as Humphrey Fellows, and their determination to go forth as more powerful agents of change thanks to their Humphrey year. The song switches between the entire group's singing of original lyrics and the individual recitation of several of Hubert Humphrey's most evocative statements concerning international peace, leadership, morality, and courage.

This event is brought to you by the Global Brigades, Mexican Students Association, Phi Iota Alpha Fraternity, and Organización Dominicana de Recursos Internacionales (ODRI), as part of International Education Week, a university-wide celebration of BU's global engagement.

This will be a formal event.
