Since January 2002, John Schulz has been editor-in-chief of the Center’s Global Beat Syndicate, providing op-ed and opinion pieces pieces to the nearly 400 newspapers who use the Knight-Ridder-Tribune News Service. Before becoming a Boston University professor in 1995, he was an award-winning reporter, foreign correspondent, senior news executive and magazine editor.
At Boston University, Schulz is Professor of International Communication, and is former chair of the Department of Mass Communication, Advertising and Public Relations (1997 to 2000). He directs BU’s London Summer Graduate Program and each year teaches courses in London in comparative politics and in international communication.
In 1962, Schulz received his BA in journalism from the University of Montana, and from 1977-79 attended Oxford University, where he was awarded the M.Phil. degree (1979) and then his doctorate (1981) in international. In 1985-86 he attended the National War College in Washington, D.C. and was a Professor of National Security Policy at NWC from 1989-91.
In 1962, Schulz was a reporter for six months at UPI in San Francisco, followed by more than eight years as a USAF instructor and combat fighter pilot. During his 21 years at Voice of America, he was a regional correspondent and bureau chief. He reported in Hong Kong (1972-4), Tokyo (1974-77) and Islamabad (1987-89) and served shorter stints as bureau chief in Saigon, Bangkok and London, winning several awards for his reports and analyses. As a senior news executive at VOA headquarters, Washington, he was Assignments and Foreign Editor and then Deputy News Director. From 1992 to 1995, he was Deputy Director for Publications at the Arms Control Association in Washington and editor of its award-winning Arms Control Today magazine.
His special areas of interest are arms control, deterrence theory, terrorism, China, Japan, Afghanistan and South Asia. He has published and lectured extensively and appeared frequently on nationwide or regional radio and TV shows after the events of September 11, 2001.

In 1967-68, Schulz flew 275 combat missions as an F-100 fighter pilot in Vietnam. His 23 combat decorations include the Silver Star, 3 Distinguished Flying Crosses, and two Gallantry Crosses awarded by the South Vietnamese government.
