Sustainable Economic Development
via Tourism

The four-month Graduate Diploma in Sustainable Economic Development via Tourism provides students with the skills and knowledge to cultivate tourism as an industry that achieves environmentally and culturally responsible economic development in a variety of international settings. Students will learn how to transform the raw cultural and ecological assets of developing and developed nations into sustainable tourism infrastructures that yield not only long-term economic growth and stable employment, but also exciting travel opportunities:

 

STUDY market evaluation, conservation practices, advertising, infrastructure and logistical planning, budgeting, and the dynamics of cultural interactions

EXPLORE how ecological and cultural assets can be developed into tourism destinations and commodities—while preserving them for the future

ANALYZE case studies to understand the feasibility, benefits, liabilities, and economic potential of eco- and cultural tourism in a variety of settings

PLAN an integrated tourist industry at the local, regional, and national levels

TRANSFER up to twenty of the credits you earn toward a Master of Science in Administrative Studies

Dr. Samuel Mendlinger B.A., M.Sc., Ph.D.


Dr. Mendlinger, BU Global Sustainable Economic Development via Tourism Academic Coordinator, is a dual American- Israeli citizen whose research has resulted in economic development in communities in Asia, Africa, and South America. He holds two patents, and has numerous international publications and grants. His current research and teaching interests include responsible and sustainable economic growth in underdeveloped countries. Mendlinger oversees the Economic Development and Tourism Management concentration for the Master of Science in Administrative Studies, and teaches courses in statistics, culture and development, and economic sustainability in tourist destinations.

Courses

The Graduate Diploma in Sustainable Economic Development via Tourism consists of 6 required courses for a total of 24 credits.

  • Evaluating and Developing Markets for Cultural Tourism
  • Infrastructure and Logistical Planning for Tourism Development
  • Planning and Operating New Ventures
  • Eco-Tourism
  • Understanding and Managing Heritage Tourism

Internships

Optional Practical Training

After successfully completing both the Graduate Diploma Program and Internship, BU Global students are eligible to apply for Optional Practical Training (OPT). Through OPT, students can remain in the U.S. and work for up to one year at a salary negotiated with the employer.

Admission Requirements

  • Minimum TOEFL Scores: 560 PP / 220 CBT / 84 iBT (iBT: Reading 21, Listening 18, Speaking 23, Writing 22)
  • Minimum IELTS Score: 6.5
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent
  • Two years of work experience
