If you have an employee or coworker whose job performance is troubling to
you, getting information about what to say and how to handle the situation
might be helpful. Most of us prefer to ignore the problem and hope it will
go away. Intervening earlier, however, is more likely to be successful to
help the employee address underlying issues and function more effectively
in the job. Possible causes of job performance issues are: alcohol, drug
abuse, depression, family issues, medical illness, immaturity, job dissatisfaction,
or personality conflicts. Problems can be sudden in onset or progressive.
Warning Signs:
- Arguments with family
- Changes in personality
- Conflict with others
- Early departures
- Erratic performance
- Excessive tardiness
- Extended lunches/breaks
- Frequent physical illness
- High accident or error rate
- Increased time away
- Lower efficiency/productivity
- Unexcused absences
- Unusual behavior
Physical alterations:
- Change in personal hygiene
- Irritability, moodiness, social isolation
- Neglect of previously enjoyable activities
- Slurred speech
- Smell of alcohol
- Weight loss
