LLNL was founded in 1952 as a nuclear weapons research and design laboratory to provide scientific and engineering support for the development of the U.S. nuclear weapons stockpile. The main laboratory site is located 40 miles east of San Francisco in Alameda County. Site 300 is a 7,000-acre experimental test site located in the Altamont Hills south of Livermore. The main activities of LLNL

include designing thermonuclear weapons, providing diagnostic measurements for weapons tests, harnessing energy for civilian power sources, and physics research. LLNL also leads research programs in environmental science, global climate modeling, biosciences, computing, and forensic science. Energy independence and stockpile safety and surveillance were recently added to LLNL’s areas of responsibility.

Founded in 1931 by the creator of the cyclotron, Berkeley Lab is situated in the hills above the University of California, Berkeley near San Francisco Bay. Cross-disciplinary teams of scientists carry out research in science and engineering at Berkeley Lab with a focus on high-energy physics. Notable fields of research include fundamental studies of the universe, quantitative biology, nanoscience, new energy systems and environmental solutions, and the use of integrated computing as a tool for discovery.

Sandia/CA is a national research and development facility that was founded in 1956 to develop weapons systems and technology to support the U.S. nuclear policy. SNL/CA is located adjacent to LLNL in Livermore, California. The main activity focus at SNL/CA involves applying engineering expertise to arming, fusing, firing, and delivering the completed weapons unit to the U.S. military. Current responsibilities include nuclear stockpile stewardship, nonproliferation and materials control, enhancing energy and critical infrastructure, and addressing emerging national security threats.
