In addition to the medical screening and surveillance programs operated by Boston University and UC San Francisco, there are several other independent organizations throughout the country that carry out DOE Former Worker Programs to evaluate the work-related health effects of former workers. The DOE provides funding to independent teams of health experts to offer unbiased medical screening to former workers who may be at significant risk for occupational diseases.
Occupational health teams collect information about health hazards at DOE facilities through site visits, interviews, focus groups, and archival review of existing data to determine worker exposures to long-term health hazards. All information will be de-identified and summarized in reports for use by other researchers and interested parties.

The National Supplemental Screening Program (NSSP)
Former Workers who wish to be screened but are unable to travel to the screening location may be eligible to participate in the NSSP. The NSSP coordinates with the regional screening programs to provide a customized medical examination and screening tests at an occupational health facility close to their home. Participants who enroll in the NSSP will complete the same work and medical history questionnaires as other participants who go through the regional screening program. Their results will also be treated in the same confidential manner in accordance with HIPAA, and may be included in the overall screening results.
For more information on the NSSP contact the regional screening program for the DOE site at which you worked. |
