Aquatics


Advanced Aqua Workout [back to top]
Cross-train in the water working both vertically and horizontally with a variety of exercises, including interval and circuit training. Minimal swim skills required.


AQ 220 Scuba, A1 [back to top]
Prereq: 300-yard swim test. Instruction in the sport of scuba diving. Successful completion of this course includes four open-water dives and certifies the student as a Basic Scuba Diver.

AQ 320 Lifeguard Training [back to top]
Prerequisites: Must be at least 15 years old and pass the swim test given by the instructor at the first class. A $50 fee will be retained from those who do not pass the precourse test. This American Red Cross Lifeguard Training course emphasizes professionalism, accident prevention, surveillance, victim recognition, and equipment-based rescues. Students who pass the practical and written exams receive certification that includes Lifeguard Training and First Aid (valid for three years) and CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer (valid for one year).


AQ 330 Water Safety Instructor [back to top]
Prerequisites: Must be at least 16 years old and have intermediate (American Red Cross Level 4) swimming skills. A swim and water safety assessment will be conducted on the first day of class. A $50 fee will be retained from those who do not pass the swim assessment. This instructor-training course includes teaching techniques for the progressive swimming courses, Community Water Safety, and the Infant and Preschool Aquatic Program. Students who pass a written exam and practical skills test receive certification as an American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor.

A total body workout designed to increase cardiovascular fitness, muscular endurance, and flexibility in a low-impact environment.


Aqua Noodle Workout [back to top]
Noodles aren't for kids anymore. This fun but thorough workout combines swimming and aqua aerobics- a great form of cross-training for any athlete. Work your legs and hips kicking on the side, front, and back. Increase cardiovascular fitness and strength with vertical exercises using the noodle. Some swimming skills required. Summer.


Aqua Step [back to top]
This class is Step Aerobics set to water without the stressful impact on your joints! Through the use of weighted aqua steps, exercises are performed on and off the platform in shallow water. All levels welcome; individuals determine intensity.


Aqua Therapy [back to top]
Done in warm shallow water, this therapeutic class will assist with injuries, arthritis and stiff joints. Through slow repetitive movements it is possible to strengthen and stretch muscles without undue stress on the joint or injury. Great for improving limited mobility. Will take place in recreation pool (0-depth ramp with wheelchair access).


Aqua Yoga [back to top]
The supportive environment of warm water unites with the discipline of yoga. Exercises originally done while lying on the back or in kneeling or sitting positions are adapted to water. Breathing techniques are emphasized. A great workout and stress reliever in one class!


Basic Swimming [back to top]
Instruction in basic swimming skills for beginners and advanced beginners. Emphasis is on improvement of the crawl stroke; breaststroke, backstroke, sidestroke, elementary backstroke, and safety skills are practiced. PDP PE 114 is .5 credit; first class meets after spring break.


Beginning Swimming for Women [back to top]
A learn to swim class designated specifically for women, instructed by a woman, during a time when the pool is closed to other activity to ensure privacy and comfort for beginners.


Deep Water Fitness [back to top]
All levels welcome; must be able to swim. With the use of a floatation belt and barbells, resistance exercises are performed to increase cardiovascular fitness and strengthening. This is a great option for cross-training or athletes recovering from an injury

Hot Aqua Yoga [back to top]
This class will incorporate the spa pool which is heated to 102 degrees to gain some of the advantages associated with "hot" yoga. The techniques acquired will facilitate the power inherent in movement which is initiated and maintained throughout the core body rather than the extremities. We will also work on attaining greater mobility throughout the thoracic spine. Come and unlock the unused potential in your hips and, at the same time have a great time hanging out at the hot tub! (Those with heart disease, diabetes, history of stroke, high or low blood pressure or are pregnant should consult a physician before participating.)


Hydro Dynamics (listed as Aqua Aerobics/Hydrodynamics) [back to top]
A total body workout designed to increase cardiovascular fitness, muscular endurance, and flexibility in a low-impact environment. 0.5 cr. 2nd sem.


Lifeguard Instructor [back to top]
Prerequisites: Instructor candidates must be at least 17 years old and pass the precourse session that includes a written exam and skill assessment for Lifeguard Training, First Aid, and CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer. (With successful completion of the precourse, candidates will renew their Lifeguard Training certifications during the testing.) A $50 fee will be retained from those who do not pass the precourse session and can not continue in the LGI course. The coursework prepares instructor candidates to teach the American Red Cross Lifeguard Training course and includes first aid and CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer, Oxygen Administration, and Preventing Disease Transmission. Those who anticipate needing more practice with the new Lifeguard Training and CPR/AED skills are encouraged to enroll in the Lifeguard Training Review course. Students must have their own resuscitation mask and Lifeguarding textbook (the instructor manual will be supplied and is included in the cost of the course).

A $50 fee will be retained from those who do not pass the precourse test. This American Red Cross course will review equipment-based rescues, CPR/AED and First Aid. Successful completion of practical skills and written exam will renew certification in Lifeguard Training, CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer and First Aid. Must bring own resuscitation mask and Lifeguarding textbook, or purchase before first class (available at our facility).


Masters Swim [back to top]
Prereq: Ability to swim 500 yards in ten minutes or less and proficient at the four competitive strokes - butterfly, backstroke, breaststroke and freestyle. Coached workouts for the fitness swimmer, competitor or triathlete.


Pre-Masters [back to top]
Prereq: Ability to swim 500 yards continuously (no time limit) and competence in freestyle, backstroke and breaststroke. Designed for swimmers who want to gain endurance, learn training techniques, and improve strokes. This program will help prepare swimmers for either a Masters Swim Program or for the use of lap swimming as a form of aerobic exercise.

Scuba Diving [back to top]
Prereq: 200-yard swim test and 10 minute float. Course includes all pool and academic training to become scuba certified. Pool equipment is provided. Book fee: $80 due to instructor. Open water dives, necessary to become certified, will be offered by instructor for an additional fee of $200. Purchase of personal gear is required for open water dives.


Springboard Diving [back to top]
Introduction to basic board work, including somersaults and twisting. Open to both beginning and experienced divers.


Swim Ex Video Stroke Analysis, 1 session [back to top]
Receive one-on-one feedback from one of our professional Masters coaches through underwater video analysis. Swimming in our SwimEx flume allows the swimmer to maintain a constant speed for analyzing inefficient movement and form in your stroke. During your private session you will swim the strokes you wish to improve on while being filmed at varying speeds in the flume. The coach will then provide instant feedback reviewing the film with you and then burn the video onto a CD for you to keep. Participate in a single session, or return a second time to be analyzed after having practiced coaching points and look for improvement.

Swimming for Triathletes [back to top]
For advanced swimmers who wish to learn how to train for triathlon and for current triathletes wishing to focus on distance freestyle for racing. Coached by an experienced and accomplished competitive swimmer and triathlete.


Swimming, Beginning [back to top]
For those who have had little or no swimming experience. Instruction in basic swimming skills for beginners to advanced beginners. Learn and improve the crawl stroke, elementary backstroke, backstroke, sidestroke, and breaststroke. Work at your own pace with individualized guidance from the instructor.


Swimming, Fitness [back to top]
Prereq: Ability to swim 200 yards continuously. For swimmers who wish to learn and apply the basics of fitness swimming, including technique drills, flip turns, reading a pace clock, interval training, and creating a personalized workout. Coached workouts are provided for more advanced swimmers.


Swimming, Stroke Improvement [back to top]
For swimmers who have a solid understanding of the crawl stroke and are familiar with backstroke and breaststroke. Students learn drills for skill improvement. Emphasis is on body form, stroke efficiency, and conditioning in all the strokes.


Synchronized Swimming - Beginning [back to top]
Learn the Olympic sport that requires tremendous athleticism, technique, and grace. This introductory class will focus on swimming drills and figures such as ballet legs, eggbeatering, and vertical splits. Simple synchronized formations will also be taught. Participants should have strong swimming skills to enroll and must pass a prerequisite swimming test. Swim test will be administered on the first day of class.


Water Polo Scrimmage [back to top]
Pre-req: Ability to tread water for 10 minutes and swim 50 yards head-up freestyle. For those who have completed the intro class or have experience playing polo. Learn defensive and offensive plays through drills while increasing strength and endurance in the water. This is a great opportunity to play matches with men and women and improve your game. Class will include swim conditioning and coaching.

A medium to high intensity workout to increase cardiovascular fitness and strengthening. Done in shallow water, this class incorporates water resistance and powering off the pool bottom.

Water Tai Chi [back to top]
Water Tai Chi combines the flowing movements of Tai Chi and a supportive water environment. The aquatic setting can enhance the physical and psychological benefits of Tai Chi, including balance, strength and flexibility along with relaxation and stress relief. The Tai Chi forms are adaptable for any physical limitations and all abilities are welcome. This class will meet in the warm, shallow pool.

Wave Run [back to top]
Intensity adjusted to all levels of fitness. Drills will include walking and running against the river vortex and leg strengthening movements using water resistance. Great cross-training for runners.

Children's Aquatics


Beginning Diving [back to top]
For 6-12 year olds. This is an introduction to springboard diving for the beginner. Students will learn basic dive skills (hurdle, straight, tuck, pike position) with emphasis on safety. Prerequisites: Must be able to demonstrate a standing dive from the side of the pool and swim 25 yards front crawl.


Bubbles, Preschool 1 [back to top]
For 3-5 year olds. Bubbles is designed for preschoolers who are ready to be in a class without their parent or guardian in the water. This class is taught with close supervision from the instructor (1:4 ratio of instructor to child). Children will learn how to get their face wet, blow bubbles, explore the water with their instructor and practice skills with support. Children should have confidence swimming without a parent. Twos in Training is recommended if the child is not ready to swim without a parent or guardian.


Dolphins - Preschool 4 [back to top]
For 3-5 year olds. Skills from Splash will be reviewed and students will focus on building strength in the water by swimming without support. To enroll in this class, students should be able to float, glide, and swim 5 yards on their front and back without support and be comfortable in deep water. Students will learn coordination front and back crawl without support, deep water skills like treading water, and breaststroke and butterfly kick. The ratio for Dolphin is one instructor to five students.


Intermediate Diving [back to top]
For 7-16 year olds. A continuation of beginning springboard diving. Builds on beginning dive skills (hurdle, straight, tuck, pike position) with emphasis on safety. Twisting and reverse dives will be introduced. Prerequisites: Must be able to demonstrate a standing dive and swim using alternate breathing one length of the diving well and must have passed Beginning Diving or equivalent.


Intro. to Competitive Diving [back to top]
For 8-19 year olds. Divers should meet the minimum dive requirements for FINA competition in their age group, and/or have the approval of the instructor. Training will reinforce the fundamentals of diving (strength and flexibility, boardwork, posture, body alignment, dive initiation mechanics and entry techniques), while focusing on learning new dives and meet preparation.


Introduction to Water Polo [back to top]
For 8-16 year olds. This class is an instructional class designed to teach students skills to play water polo. They'll learn the basics of water polo: fundamental egg beater kick, passing, shooting, general rules and general tactics of play through informal scrimmages with classmates. Prerequisites: Must be comfortable in deep water, be able to swim 25 yards freestyle and be able to tread water for at least 4 minutes.


Level 1 - Intro. to Water Skills [back to top]
For 6-11 year olds. An introduction to water, emphasizing comfort and safety. Elementary aquatic skills are introduced such as bubble blowing, kicking, and floating with close supervision from the instructor. There are no prerequisites for this class.


Level 2- Fundamental Aquatic Skills [back to top]
For 6-11 year olds. Builds on the fundamental skills from level 1. Students learn to float and recover without support and explore swimming on the front and back. This level marks the beginning of true locomotion skills. Prerequisites: Can do some skills unsupported, such as floating, gliding, and kicking, even if for only a few seconds. Child is very comfortable blowing bubbles and submerging mouth, nose and eyes.


Level 3 - Stroke Development [back to top]
For 6-12 year olds. Builds on locomotion skills from level 2. Students learn to coordinate the front crawl and back crawl with breathing techniques. Head-first entries and elements of the butterfly, sidestroke, breaststroke and elementary backstroke are introduced. Prerequisites: Can swim on front and back unsupported for at least 15 feet with alternating arm action and continuous kicking. Can float and glide unsupported and fully submerge at least 5 times continuously.


Level 4 - Stroke Improvement [back to top]
For 7-16 year olds. Stroke Improvement - Develops confidence, coordination and strength in all six strokes (front crawl, back crawl, breaststroke, butterfly, elementary backstroke and sidestroke). Open turns and more advanced entries are introduced. Prerequisites: Can swim front crawl at least 15 yards, back crawl 15 yards and butterfly and breaststroke kick at least 15 feet. Can do a kneeling dive and tread water for at least 30 seconds.


Level 5 - Stroke Refinement [back to top]
For 7-16 year olds. Stroke Refinement - Builds on coordination and refinement of all six strokes (front crawl, back crawl, breaststroke, butterfly, elementary backstroke and sidestroke). Flip turns on front and back are introduced. Swimming at greater distances is achieved. Prerequisites: Can swim front crawl 25 yards with rotary breathing. Can swim 15 yards of breaststroke, butterfly, elementary backstroke, and sidestroke. Can do a standing dive and tread water for 1 minute.


Level 6 - Swim & Skill Proficiency [back to top]
For 7-16 year olds. Swimming and Skill Proficiency - Refines strokes to focus on efficiency, power and smoothness over greater distances. Flip turns, treading water, and head-first entries are emphasized. Students will work to build endurance by swimming longer distances. Prerequisites: Can swim front crawl and back crawl at least 50 yards and all other strokes at least 25 yards. Technique in all the strokes should be strong with good coordination. Can do flip turns, shallow dives and tread water for at least 2 minutes.


Parent -Tot A [back to top]
For children 6-18 months. One parent or guardian must work in the water with the infant/toddler under the direction of the instructor. This class is not designed to teach children to survive in the water on their own. Following the American Red Cross Parent and Child Aquatic Program, children are encouraged to feel comfortable in the water in a fun and safe environment through the use of songs and activities. Information on safety and swimming techniques are given to parents.


Parent-Tot B [back to top]
For children 18 months-3 years. One parent or guardian must work in the water with the infant/toddler under the direction of the instructor. This class is not designed to teach children to survive in the water on their own. Splash, Preschool -3 [back to top]
For 3-5 year olds. Children should be able to perform skills like floating and submerging underwater comfortably without any support before enrolling in this class. Skills such as swimming on one's own and early stroke development will be taught in a class with a ratio of one instructor to five students. Participants will also practice floating and swimming on their front and back as well as kicking and underwater skills.


Synchronized Swimming [back to top]
For 8-16 year olds. This class is designed for swimmers with no previous synchronized swimming experience and who want to learn basic skills. Students will be introduced to sculling, the eggbeater kick and the support scull. Beginner movements will be taught including the tub turn, ballet leg, and walk over. Students will also learn a basic routine set to music. Prerequisites: Must be comfortable in deep water and able to tread water for at least 4 minutes.


Twos in Training [back to top]
For 2-3 year olds who have completed Parent-Tot B and are ready to transition to group lessons but need a little more experience working with an instructor and following directions in a class setting. The first two classes will involve the parent or guardian working with the child in the water with an emphasis on the child working with the instructor on floating, kicking, and putting their face in the water. During the third and fourth lesson, the parent or guardian will remain on the pool deck. For the final two lessons, the parent or guardian will remain in the waiting area, similar to a preschool class. Ratio of instructor to children is 1:3.


Wave, Preschool - 2 [back to top]
For 3-5 year olds. Wave is taught without a parent in the water with close supervision from the instructor (1:4 ratio). Skills from Bubbles are built upon in this class and children are encouraged to try more skills such as, floating and kicking on their front and back on their own. Children should be able to comfortably and voluntarily submerge their nose, eyes and mouth to enroll in this class. Previous experience without a parent in the water is also required.


Youth Competitive Diving [back to top]

For 8-18 year olds. This class provides an opportunity for young swimmers who want to learn advanced skills in preparation for competitive swimming. Students will focus on improving stroke technique for the four competitive strokes while practicing flip turns, starts and racing skills. Endurance will be a large component of the workouts and team work, goal setting and good sportsmanship will be incorporated into the program.

Children's Climbing


Kids' Rock Climbing [back to top]
For 9-12 year olds. Introduce your child to the joys of climbing. Classes will cover the rules of climbing, knot tying, harness safety, and basic technique. Climbing games will also be explored.


Parent-Child Climbing [back to top]
For children ages 6 and up, with the same adult each week. A great way to learn this exciting sport is to share it with your child. This course will teach participants all the necessary skills needed to pass the Top Rope Qualifier Test. Instruction will include rope management and climbing knots, belay technique, needed to pass the Top Rope Qualifier Test. Rock Climbing for Teens [back to top]
This class, for teens ages 13-16 years, covers introductory climbing techniques, belaying, safe climbing practices and safe use of climbing equipment.

Children's Dance


Ballet [back to top]
Basic ballet technique modified for children. Designed to teach basic ballet vocabulary and rhythm skills to children who enjoy movement


Hip Hop, Beginning [back to top]
For 8-12 year olds. This energetic dance class teaches both boys and girls the latest urban dance steps. The class includes proper conditioning and warm-up, learning the Hip Hop vocabulary and perfecting combinations. Your child will learn age appropriate, expressive dance steps to his/her favorite music.

For children ages 9-13 years. Participants should have prior dance training.


Moves N Grooves [back to top]
For 5-8 year olds. This class introduces girls and boys to the fundamentals of dance in a lively, structured environment. The vocabulary draws from different dance styles and lays the foundation for further study. Your child will improve coordination, fitness, balance, and musicality. The class will include creative problem-solving activities that encourage students to create their own steps and explore their own style.

The concepts of ballet are presented using both traditional and creative approaches. Your child will develop his/her flexibility, balance, musicality and grace in a supportive and empowering atmosphere.

For 9-12 year olds. This class will introduce children to the basics of tap dance while working on balance, coordination and musicality.

Enrichment Programs

For children in grades 4-8. Get up and moving after school by spending your after school hours at BU's FitRec Center. Activities include: rock climbing, court sports, and youth strength training

Advanced Tumbling [back to top]
For 6-8 year olds. For children with previous tumbling experience. This class builds on that experience to teach moves on the beam and floor.


Baby Gym [back to top]
For children ages 6 to 13 months. A terrific class to introduce your little bundle of joy to the wonderful world of movement. The class will meet in the children's programming area and will be filled with beautiful colors, sounds, and rhythmic activities. Parent participation is required.

For children ages 14 months - 2 years. For the baby that is now exploring his/her world with various forms of movement. This class is for the parent and child to further develop the joys of colors, sound and movement.

The routines consist of low weight and high repetitions with the amount of weight lifted dependant on the child's size and fitness level. Students will be introduced to fundamentals of musicality, posture and connection, and the six basic steps of tango from which all patterns are developed. Close-embrace tango is the style of dancing that originated and is still danced in Buenos Aires - and which has become hugely popular in major cities around the world.

Prerequisite: Intermediate ballet skills, regular attendance at intermediate or advanced ballet technique classes, and consent of instructor. Students learn a modern ballet and then work to refine their execution of the material. In addition to class sessions, there are two required showings, a technical rehearsal, a dress rehearsal, and three public performances of the ballet. Cuban Salsa Rueda is danced in a circle of partners. Social in nature, this dance is done in clubs and involves changing partners. There is a leader that calls out moves in Spanish for the group to follow. Students will learn the beginning figures and styling.

EMTs plunge into the physiology of accidental hypothermia and frostbite. Topics will include differentiation of acute and sub-acute hypothermia, how they differently affect patients, and how to treat victims of cold emergencies.


ACLS for the EMT-B [back to top]
This 3 hour course is intended to introduce the EMT-B to the fundamentals of the Advanced Cardiac Life Support approach. After completing the course, the EMT-B will be better suited to assist with the delivery of the ACLS care. Topics to be covered include: advance airway management, cardiac pharmacology, deflibrillation/cardioversion, basic cardiac rhythms, and challenging resuscitation situations. Current CPR certifications at the healthcare provider level is required.

Prereq: Advanced Cardiac Life Support. This 8-hour course is designed for ACLS providers who wish to renew their provider status. This class will teach students how to maintain an open airway using advanced techniques such as the Esophageal Tracheal Combitube (ETC), Pharyngeotracheal Lumen Airway (PtL), Laryngeal Mask Airway (LMA), and Endtotracheal Intubation. Students will have supervised practice on airway manikins as well as lecture time to review each device.

Topics will include when and how to request air medical transport, how to set up a landing zone, and important helicopter safety considerations. This American Heart Association course is a 6 hour program designed to give students the opportunity to learn, practice and demonstrate many airway skills used in resuscitation. Healthcare providers whose occupation or volunteer activities require airway management skills, in addition to professionals in the field of resuscitation and airway management such as scientists, educators, researchers, and manufacturers of medical devices will find the course beneficial. The learning model for this course includes video-guided instruction, skills practice, and testing in bag-mask ventilation and airway adjuncts, laryngeal mask airway, esophageal-tracheal combitube, endotracheal tube, and impedance threshold devices. This class reviews the uses and applications of basic tools of the EMT responding to a trauma call. EMTs will review the epidemiology and physiology of traumatic injuries and will discuss the appropriate treatment for various scenarios. The primary focus of the class is on the use and application of the materials and procedures used to provide treatment. The EMTs will discuss the appropriate uses of EMS equipment and will practice hands-on with some commonly used materials including bandages, closures, slings, dressings and splints.

Challenges in Patient Communication [back to top]
Patient assessment is one of the fundamental skills of the EMT, but anxiety, language and cultural barriers, and lack of experience can severely impair the effectiveness of a patient interview. Drug & Alcohol Overdose [back to top]
In urban areas such as Boston, the prevalence of drug and alcohol overdose is higher than that encountered in other more rural areas. A more in-depth understanding of the pharmacological actions of particular drugs on the human body gives the EMS provider the ability to distinguish between overdoses of various drug classes. This course will provide an overview of the physiological effects of drug overdose, with a particular emphasis on clinical presentation. Drug classifications that will be discussed include illicit street drugs, club drugs, and commonly abused substances such as inhalants and alcohol. Patient scenarios will provide practice in recognizing the appropriate assessment skills and patient care.

It's an ideal class for healthcare providers who are preparing to take ACLS, but can also be used by anyone needing to learn ECG recognition skills and/or pharmacology. This comprehensive course presents information on basic electrophysiology, normal ECG measurements, basic arrhythmias, basic ACLS drugs, usage and routes of administration during cardiovascular emergencies, and how to integrate basic drug pharmacology into ACLS algorithms. Echocardiography for Emergency Medical Personnel [back to top]
This is a cutting edge, hands-on course for EMS providers and pre-hospital professionals. Prerequisite: Current CPR certification. Offered in conjunction with Priority Dispatch, this course covers an essential aspect to the Emergency Medical System. It provides basic and advanced concepts that promote a safe, effective, and professional Emergency Medical Dispatch program. This course results in certification by the National Academy of Emergency Medical Dispatch (NAEMD) and meets or exceeds the criteria set forth by the USDOT, US NIH, and other agencies. Emergency Medical Technician [back to top]
An intensive course that prepares students to take the written and practical EMT exams issued by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts or the National Registry of EMTs. Students learn all aspects of pre-hospital emergency care for injuries and illnesses, and practice patient assessments and emergency procedures. This course is designed to enhance and build upon your current knowledge and experience as an emergency response instructor. The course will incorporate a variety of multi-media strategies, education techniques, and the most up-to-date information. Items discussed include administration of courses, developing teaching styles, adapting to various learning modalities and handling problematic students. Several activities will be integrated throughout including: role-playing, small group work, and moderated discussions.


EMS ICS/Hazmat Awareness for EMS [back to top]
This six-hour, one-day course, enables Emergency Medical Services Professionals to identify the basic chemical and physical properties of hazardous materials and to understand monitoring/identification equipment and available detection methods. Students will gain a basic understanding of the ICS system in the pre-hospital EMS setting, and identify elements of the ICS. The FEMA ICS100 test is offered. This program is approved for five (5) OEMS credit house.


EMS in the Wilderness [back to top]
This 16 hour course is designed for individuals who desire an introduction to wilderness medicine, but do not necessarily require a certification. Topics include wilderness protocols, trauma management for extended periods of time, equipment improvisation, environmental medicine, toxins, backcountry medicine, and wilderness rescue. Participants will take part in practical skills, emphasizing the equipment and methods discussed.


EMS Rounds [back to top]
Review and critique of actual EMS calls. Discussions will include appropriateness of actions of all the EMTs involved, areas for improvement and different approaches/techniques for the same situation. A majority of the class will be spent in a discussion format surrounding the EMS calls presented. Participants are welcome to bring run sheets from calls they wish to discuss provided all patient identification has been rendered illegible.

Mass Casualty Experience [back to top]
One hour is spent in a lecture type format in which participants review response to mass casualty scenarios and the specific roles of positions within the EMS MCI command system. After which, participants choose roles in the command structure and are briefed on the nature of the incident, which involves live moulaged victims. The exercise ends with a critique of the group's performance by the victims and coordinator after all the victims have been found and treated. Traumatic brain injury (TBI) patients are among the most challenging patients EMS responders encounter, but science has shown that the EMT can make a big difference in the outcome of these patients. Research has identified the first hours after trauma as being the most critical in terms of preserving and possibly restoring neurological function by minimizing those changes that occur on a subcerebellar and tissue level. Understanding the variations in blood pressure, oxygenation, and other extra-cranial parameters helps prevent secondary injury. Illnesses to be covered include acute psychosis, schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, borderline personality disorder, and depression. This course focuses on essential communication skills for EMS providers working with Spanish-speaking populations. Participants will learn basic pronunciation as well as quick and easy phrases for application in situations in which English will not suffice. Following this course, EMTs will recognize their duties as a public health practitioner.

Participants will be provided an overview of various drugs that the EMT-B may encounter. Classes of drugs and their actions will be reviewed. Physiological effects, assessment, and treatment for each class of drug will be discussed. Broad overview of traumatic injuries encountered by EMT's. Epidemiology of traumatic injuries will be discussed. Anatomy, physiology and treatment for different traumatic mechanisms of injury will be reviewed including motor vehicle collisions, gunshot wounds, and falls. Focus will be on ourt of hospital treatment for injuries, with added discussion of treatments that occur once the patient reaches the hospital.

This course is an introduction to the special considerations regarding the safety and treatment of assault victims. The participant will learn of the EMT's role in treating a victim of assault and discuss collaboration with law enforcement. The EMT will also have an improved understanding of the physical and emotional treatment of the assault victim. The course will be taught by a law enforcement officer who is certified as an EMT. Situations discussed will include, but are not limited to, evidence preservation and collection, sexual assault, attempted suicide, battery, and tactical EMS.

Several domestic and foreign terrorist groups will be discussed and the methods used to target large sums of people. Participants will receive a free pedometer to track calorie burning cardio activities and instructions on how to strength train and stretch in their rooms. Take part in one of the first intramural activities being offered in the new Fitness and Recreation Center. With the addition of racquetball courts to campus, we are excited to offer Wallyball for the first time. A variation of volleyball, wallyball is played in a racquetball court with four players playing on each side of the net. With the added twist of playing off the walls and ceiling, this is sure to be a lot of fun!

Can do a kneeling dive and tread water for at least 30 seconds.

Builds on coordination and refinement of all six strokes (front crawl, back crawl, breaststroke, butterfly, elementary backstroke and sidestroke). Flip turns on front and back are introduced. Swimming at greater distances is achieved.

Swimming and Skill Proficiency - Refines strokes to focus on efficiency, power and smoothness over greater distances. Skills from Bubbles are built upon in this class and children are encouraged to try more skills without the support of their instructor. Divers should meet the minimum dive requirements for FINA competition in their age group, and/or have the approval of the instructor. Training will reinforce the fundamentals of diving (strength and flexibility, boardwork, posture, body alignment, dive initiation mechanics and entry techniques), while focusing on learning new dives and meet preparation. Ages 8-19 and interested collegiate divers.


Youth Competitive Swimming [back to top]
Youth Competitive Swimming will provide an opportunity for young swimmers who want to learn advanced swimming skills in preparation for competitive swimming. Students will focus on improving stroke technique for the four competitive strokes, learn flip turns, starts and racing skills. Endurance will also be a large component of the workouts and team work, goal setting and good sportsmanship will be incorporated into the program.

A brand new program based upon the current National Strength and Conditioning Association guidelines. The routines consist of low weight and high repetitions with the amount of weight lifted dependant on the child's size and fitness level. Ashtanga Yoga [back to top]
Literally, "eight limbed yoga," Ashtanga yoga is similar to Vinyasa in that breath and movement are connected. However, in Ashtanga yoga, participants move through a precise series of postures, repeating the series until mastered, and then moving on to the next series. Each semester, class will begin with the Primary series, which focuses on detoxifying and aligning the body. If possible based on the participants, the class will then move to subsequent series.

A Vinyasa style class held on the medical campus for students, faculty and staff who cannot make it to FitRec. Vinyasa yoga links breath to movement to flow through a series of poses. Poses can be modified to accommodate yogis of all levels.

Instruction for all skill levels. Course runs on Wednesday or Thursday evenings for five weeks and is taught at the Nashoba Ski Area using their certified teaching methods. Extra fee required. 1 cr. 2nd sem. Rentals are available.

Prerequisite: Experience at the Level 3 (formerly Intermediate) Rowing & Sculling classes or beyond. It is necessary to make a commitment to more rigorous technical and workout challenges in these classes for two OR four days a week. Eight oared, four oared, coxed quads and double (and possibly single) sculls will be employed (coxing is a requirement.) A review of safety and operating procedures will be a part of this course.

The fundamental skills necessay to steer and take control of a crew and boat as a coxswain is a requirement of this class. Basic safety instruction and procedures are emphasized.

Designed with an instructional and recreational focus especially for rowers who have completed Beginning Rowing in Session 1. The goals are to refine technique and learn all aspects of the Rowing Discipline. Students must pass the Boating Swim Test to qualify for this course.

Prerequisite: Beginning and Continuing Rowing classes or the equivalent. The class is divided into levels based on the discretion of the instructors. Intermediate-level rowers who have mastered the fundamentals of sweep rowing have an instructional and recreational focus. Advanced rowers engage in rigorous workouts and competitive-level rowing. All aspects of the Rowing Discipline are emphasized, including coxing skills. Students must pass the Boating Swim Test to qualify for this course.

Prerequisite: Beginning Rowing or equivalent experience. Classes are offered at this level with an instructional and recreational focus to improve and hone skills mostly in eight oared shells (coxing is a requirement.) A review of safety and operating procedures will be a part of this course.

Prerequisite: Beginning and Level 2 (formerly Continuing) Rowing classes or equivalent. These classes involve more rigorous workouts at a higher technical level for those with some rowing experience in both eight and four oared shells (coxing is a requirement.) A review of safety and operating procedures will be a part of this course.

Fundamentals of sculling for total beginners is taught in coxed quads and recreational singles. The fundamental skills necessary to steer and take control of a crew and boat as a coxswain is a requirement of this class. Basic safety instruction and procedures are emphasized.

Prereq: Introductory Sculling or equivalent. Instruciton emphasizes the continued refinement of the stroke in sculling in all classes of boat.

For beginning and experienced rowers and scullers, boys and girls combined. Classes will be directed as in the sculling levels described above depending on experience (The fundamental skills required to steer and take control of a crew and boat as a coxswain may also be a requirement of this class.) Basic safety instruction and procedures are emphasized.

Sailing and Kayaking

Prereq: Successful completion of the Boating Swim Test. For those with little or no kayaking experience. Learn the basic skills to safely enjoy sea kayaking. Course includes: knots, terminology, self-rescue, and basic paddling maneuvers for single and double kayaks. 0.5 cr. either sem.
