Reach 2012Meet the 2012 Reach teen apprentices!

Boston University FitRec Center, 915 Commonwealth Avenue.

Reach is more than just a summer dance program.
Reach is a place to make friends, to prepare valuable skills, and to dance for local communities.  Reach combines innovative choreography and professional dance instruction to create a unique service opportunity designed to make your summer anything but ordinary.

As a member of the Reach dance company, you’ll be exposed to different styles of dance from around the world—from modern to hip-hop, from ballet to traditional Haitian, and from Chinese dance to Krumping.  You’ll meet new friends, work with dance professionals, improve your technique, and share your talents with kids who aren't regularly exposed to dance.

Reach really makes a difference in the lives of the kids it serves and those who take part in the program.  You’ll get to meet and work with youth from around the Greater Boston Area, and you’ll get to perform all over the city as a part of Reach’s intergenerational company of students, college interns, and professionals.

With the help of Reach’s professional instructors and college interns, you’ll help create a 45-minute dance performance.  The program also includes master classes, an evening performance for the public, and an informational session on preparing for college admission.

History
Reach was founded as The Summer OutReach Program and Intergenerational Company in 1990 by two of Dance Collective's co-founders and Artistic Directors, Martha Armstrong Gray and Dawn Kramer. Micki Taylor-Pinney joined them as a co-director in 1998.  In 2005, Dance Collective ceased operating as a separate non-profit organization. However, Micki Taylor-Pinney felt that the important achievements of the youth outreach programs during the preceding 16 years needed to continue.

When Dance Collective disbanded in June of 2006, Taylor-Pinney, encouraged the program's move to the university. Currently the program operates at the Fitness and Recreation Center at Boston University as a part of the Department of Physical Education, Recreation and Dance. Today, Reach remains true to the mission and goals of its founders.
