American Red Cross Certification Programs

Throughout the year, a comprehensive program of American Red Cross certification courses in Aquatics is offered to the University community and the general public.

Each year, participants are certified through courses in:

  • Lifeguard Training (r.12)
  • Lifeguard Training Review
  • Water Safety Instructor
  • Lifeguard Training Instructor

Please check the course requirements carefully prior to signing up. If you have further questions, please email the coordinator. We do not offer challenge courses here at Boston University. Challenge courses have actually been removed from the American Red Cross program entirely. If a facility is offering a one-day option to renew Lifeguard Training, it is not an American Red Cross course.

Lifeguard Training (r.12)

We are now offering the new Lifeguard Training program from the American Red Cross released in February 2012. This American Red Cross certification class will prepare students to become certified lifeguards. Students must attend all sessions and pass the swim assessment on the first day of class which now includes a treading water component. If students do not successfully pass the swim assessment, a $50 fee will be withheld. Participants must be at least 15 years old by the last day of class. Successful completion of the course will result in a two year certification in Lifeguard Training/First Aid/CPR/AED. This class is appropriate for former Lifeguards who let their certification expire.
