Sailing Pavilion

The Boston University Sailing Pavilion is open to the BU Community and the general public. Guests are welcome and encouraged to join our Sailing Program. The Sailing Boathouse is available for experienced sailors during recreational sailing hours by purchasing a Boston University Sailing Card.  The Sailing Card is valid for one academic year or the summer session.  Sailing Cards are purchased at the Department of Physical Education. After purchasing your card and passing the Boating Swim Test, you will be able to check out a sailboat.

Students registered for an Instructional Sailing Class can purchase a Sailing Card for a reduced rate of $55.

Fees and Eligibility

Purchase of a Sailing Card and successful completion of the Boating Swim Test is required.

Purchase the Sailing Card at the Registration Desk at the Department of Physical Education, Recreation, and Dance, 915 Commonwealth Ave, Monday through Friday, 8 am to 7 pm.

Guest Policy

Members of the Boston University Sailing Program are allowed to take guests once they have passed the Boating Helmsman Test.

Guests must take and pass the Boating Swim Test, administered by the lifeguard staff at the Fitness and Recreation Center during Competition Pool Hours. The guest must be accompanied by the Sailing Card Holder in order to take the Boating Swim Test. A Guest Fee of $10 must be paid after successful completion of the Boating Swim Test. Guest Fee is payable at the 1st Floor Registration area of the Fitness and Recreation Center, Monday-Friday, 8am-7pm, or at the FitRec Front Desk after 7pm on week days or on the weekend.

Swim Test Card and paid guest fee receipt would then be turned over to the Sailing Pavilion staff at the time the guest and Sailing Card holder wish to sail.

Guest fee is good for one day only.

BU Boating Swim Test

Only the Boston University Boating Swim Test administered by a lifeguard at the Fitrec pool is accepted to register for a boating class. Swim tests are given by the PERD aquatics staff at the Fitness and Recreation Center during open swim hours in the competition pool. Tests are not administered during the last 15 minutes of open swim. Each person must present a photo ID to the lifeguard. Swim tests are valid for five years. Call 358-3740 for pool hours.

Present a picture ID to a BU Lifeguard and perform the following:

1. Jump or dive into the deep end;

2. Swim for a length of 15 feet underwater;

3. Demonstrate rhythmic breathing (crawl stroke or breast stroke) continuously for four lengths of the pool (100 yards);

4. Tread water for two minutes;

5. Survival float face-down (taking breaths) for one minute.

Each skill must be performed for the entire time/distance without stopping.

Swim Test is valid for five years from the date of issue.
