Emergency Medical Response

What is Boston University Emergency Response Education?


The Emergency Response Program offers a wide array of basic, intermediate, and advanced level classes in the fall, spring, and even summer for students, faculty, staff, and members of the community.

E Classes:
For BU students who wish to receive university credit.

Noncredit Classes:
Available to BU students, BU Faculty and Staff, and non-BU members. No university credit is awarded.

Continuing Education:
Continuing Education Classes are offered to those individuals who are required to attend classes to maintain their medical certification. These classes are all approved by the Massachusetts Office of Emergency Medical Services and vary in topics from Pediatric Education for Prehospital Professionals to Automobile Extrication. EMT Refresher courses and CPR for the Professional Rescuer and AED recertification classes are also offered on a regular basis.

EMT-B Training:
Boston University is proud to offer Emergency Medical Technician Training. This 140-hour intensive course that prepares students to take the written and practical EMT exams issued by Massachusetts . Students learn all aspects of pre-hospital emergency care for injuries and illnesses, and practice patient assessments and emergency procedures. Emergency room and ambulance observations are optional components of the course. There are no course prerequisites, but students must attend all class sessions and pass written and practical exams.

The EMT-B course is available each semester for university credit or as a non-credit class. It is also available in the summer.


Group Trainings:

Student groups and departments at Boston University and beyond can arrange their own classes on dates and times of their choosing. In many cases, these classes can be held right in a department's office building. New state-of-the-art classrooms in the Fitness and Recreation Center have allowed us to expand our offerings considerably to include even more introductory and continuing education classes, including Intermediate and Advanced First Aid, Pediatric CPR and First Aid, and Basic Trauma Life Support. New Emergency Response courses will even offer instructor certification in all levels of CPR and First Aid.

We are able to offer many common Emergency Medical supplies that can be purchased either online or at the Pro-Shop at the Fitness and Recreation Center.
