Ave rivals Boston College in the finals tomorrow at UNH at noon.

at Worcester State
4/14/2013

Boston University Baseball took a huge step in their progress to grow the program, as the team took on D-3 Worcester State and won 11-4. Bowie Matteson pitched an excellent game, as most of the runs given up were unearned, and the offense provided all the help Matteson needed while Kevin O'Sullivan finishing the game off on the mound. The win helps give the program see where they are at in their progress, and should help them schedule tougher competition in the future.

In a rematch of last years NECBA championship game, the Terriers performed a similar performance in sweeping the doubleheader. BU was hitting on all cylinders, winning game 1,13-4 and game 2, 8-3. The dominant pitching performances from Bowie Matteson, David Luna, and Kevin O'Sullivan kept the Terriers in control the whole afternoon as they extended their record to 6-0.

Away at Tufts
Friday 9/21 7:30pm, Lynn, MA

On a crisp Friday night in Lynn, MA, the Terriers got just about all they could handle from a wily Tufts team. Down one in the top of the 6th, junior Kevin O'Sullivan made his first big splash with a game-tying double. A team effort in the top of the seventh put the terriers up by three and Josh Jason finished his complete game with a 1-2-3 seventh for his first win as a Terrier.

----------------------------------------------

Away at Merrimack
Sunday 9/16 12:00pm, 3pm Merrimack College

It was a long day at Merrimack College, but the Terriers outlasted Merrimack and took both games of the doubleheader.

In Game 1 Bowie Matteson made his season debut on the mound striking out nine batter and leading the Terriers to a 14-6 victory. The game was close through the first 5 innings until the Terriers exploded for 4 in the 6th and 6 in the 7th.

Game 2 was a different story as this heavyweight fight lasted an extra round, going into extra innings. The game provided two Terriers their debut on the mound. Josh Jason and Danny Alter both made their season debuts on the mound. They struggled combining to give up ten runs over 3+ innings but this did not stop the Terrier offense. After Junior Kevin O'Sullivan entered the game and shut Merrimack down, the offense continued to produce scoring 11 runs in the first seven innings. After a misplay in the infield in the bottom of the 7th, the Terriers found themselves playing bonus baseball, and they decided that one inning would be enough. Scoring 7 runs in the top of the 8th put the Terriers on top for good, for a victory of 18-11.

Away at Tufts, Moakley Field
Saturday 9/15, 12:00pm, Moakley Field

In the season opener against Tufts, the Terriers started out with a slow start but ended up putting runs on the board in the 1st, 5th, and 6th innings, taking the opener 6-1. Sophomore David Luna got the opening day start, and threw five innings of three hit ball, giving up one run, striking out eight. Kevin O'Sullivan made his Terrier debut on the mound striking out four in his two scoreless innings of work.

Offensively the Terriers had a widespread attack with five different players scoring the six runs. Sophomore first baseman Stephen Lyne, in his first action coming off Tommy John surgery went 2-3 to lead the balanced attack. Sophomore Ross Zamparelli also had two hits including a double and a Run Batted In.

Nittany Classic: Conference Championships - at Penn State
4/27-4/28

With the most gorgeous weather of the season, we went into our last race weekend of the year feeling great. Saturday's course has us begging for our mommies as we climbed Black Moshanon at the end of a 21 mile loop, a 5 mile long climb of 2,500 ft. Sunday's crit course was fast, flat, and technical, featuring 6 sharp corners and a hairy chicane causing even the most able handlers in the ECCC to keep a close watch on their speed around the corners.

Top Ten Finishes:
Nick Smith: 7th, Men's C Road Race
Caitlin Bartkus: Women's C Criterium

BU Cycling had a great season, and is already antsy for the next to start!

--------------------

Rhode Race - Providence, RI
4/20-4/21

In a joint effort of RISD and Brown University, the eastern collegiate cycling conference was presented with a fantastic lineup of races for this debut weekend.

Saturday opened with a 4 mile team trial on rolling terrain. The rain broke around mid day, just in time for the start of the road races. The road race took place on a 23 mile loop which featured 1,600 feet of climbing per lap and 3 dirt road sections. While the lower categories raced a pleasant 23 miles, the upper categories raced for up to 71 miles, leaving the top end of BU Cycling exhausted and ready for bed.

Sunday's weather was much more cooperative, though unseasonably cold for the end of April. Sunday held only one race on the agenda, an extremely short, six-corner criterium with a chicane and a windy flat. As the first proper crit of the season, everyone was pretty excited to get on course, and as such, the races took on a much quicker pace than usual. From the whistle, almost every group was strung out by turn 1, making for an extremely exciting and strategic day of racing.

Podiums:
Anne Raymond, 3rd, Women's B Road Race
David Villari, 3rd, Men's B Criterium
Patrick Hermann, 3rd, Men's Intro Road Race

Top 10 Finishes:

Army Spring Classic - West Point, NY
4/13-4/14

In the 7th weekend of our nine weekend long season of out-of-this-world, faster than fast, mind blowingly awesome cycling, the BU team pulled out a couple of great results for all three events (Individual uphill time trial, Road race, Criterium). The road race featured over 1,000 ft of climbing over 13.2 miles per lap throughout the stunning hudson river valley. On Sunday, before we'd even had a chance to inhale our morning coffee, riders were being sent of at 20 second intervals up a steady but challenging 2.9 mile course with 800 ft of climbing. In case this was not enough to shred even some of the toughest legs in the peleton, the quick criterium closed the weekend out later that day.

Podiums:
David Villari - 1st place Men's B criterium

Top 10 finishes:
8th: Gabriela Ruiz Women's B criterium

Boston University as a team ranked 17th this weekend out of over 40 schools who participated in the 2013 edition of the Army Spring Classic

----------------------

Shippensburg Scurry - Shippensburg, PA
4/6-4/7

Saturday consisted of a criterium in the morning, a short circuit around Shippensburg University followed by a mass start hill climb in the late afternoon. Sunday was the road race, a larger circuit with a steep climb. The club placed 26th in the school omnium for the weekend. John smith achieved his best result to date with a 5th in the road race.

-------------------------

Bard College Race - Kingston, NY
3/24/2013

This weekend was short and sweet, with only 1 race taking place on Bard College's quaint and scenic campus. Though the weekend was not as well attended as some of the regular favorites, 27 schools showed up. BU ranked 12th for this weekends race.

Podiums:
Tess Timmes: 3rd, Women's C

Top 10 Finishes:
Anne Raymond: 4th, Women's C
Billy Pellegrini: 5th, Men's Intro
Patrick Hermann: 9th, Men's Intro
Lydia Hausle: 10th, Women's A

---------------------------

Philly Phlyer - Philadelphia, PA
3/16-3/17

Freezing rain and even some hail made for a bit of interesting racing on Saturday. Our races began with a team time trial, with Michael Wexler, and Robert Dalgarno taking 3rd place in the Men's Intro division. As the day got colder and wetter, racing became extraordinarily epic, and thankfully, all of our riders made it safely, albeit freezingly, back into our vans unscathed.

Sunday brought a much nicer bit of weather, making the fast, challenging criterium course a safe an exciting ordeal. With three of our newest riders in the intro field, we were hopeful for a top ten finish, and we succeeded with Billy Pellegrini and Robert Dalgarno taking 8th and 9th place, respectively. Our race weekend finished up with Lydia Hausle taking on the Women's A/B field in an ungodly fast field, taking second place in the Women's B field.

BU moved into 17th place in the overall team omnium of over 40 schools, and is currently ranked 8th in our division.

Podiums:
Lydia Hausle: 2nd place Women's B Road Race
Lydia Hausle: 2nd place Women's B Criterium
BU Cycling: 3rd place Men's Intro Team Time Trial

Top Ten Finishes:
Robert Dalgarno: 4th place Men's Intro Road Race
Billy Pellegrini: 5th place Men's Intro Road Race
Billy Pellegrini: 8th Men's Intro Criterium
Robert Dalgarno: 9th Men's Intro Criterium

ECCC Week 3: Columbia/Stevens
3/9-3/10

Once the sun broke through on Saturday morning, the snow began to melt away and a fast, skyscraper lined criterium course became the focal point of over 800 racers and countless curious onlookers. The day warmed up beautifully, breaking into the 50's, and our racers earned some of their best achievements so far this season. Sunday found the team groggy and disoriented after losing an hour to daylight savings. Again, however, the weather was fantastic and each field took to their road races. Each lap of the challenging 6 mile loop had over 550 feet of climbing involved, many on very steep inclines. By weekends end, tired and tormented by even the sight of a small rise in the road, we piled into our big red van, moving into 22nd place of 40 participating universities in the Eastern Collegiate Cycling Conference.

Podiums:
Anne Raymond - 1st place Women's Intro Criterium
Anne Raymond - 2nd place Women's C Circuit Race
Lydia Hausle - 3rd place Women's B Circuit Race

Top Ten Finishes:
Lydia Hausle - 4th place Women's B Criterium
Tess Timmes - 5th place Women's C Criterium

This years season opener featured 3 outstanding race courses: a quick, flat individual time trial, a criterium with a slight incline, and a short, 1 mile circuit with a steep climb. We entered the season strong in numbers, bringing along 12 Boston University Cyclists, six of whom were new to the team this year. Currently ranked 24th out of the 36 schools who competed this weekend, we are hoping to continue scoring points and climb the ranks throughout the season. Notable finishes from the weekend are as follows:

NH Training Weekend
Fri 10/12/12 - Sun 10/14/12

The training weekend was a 3 day trip to Lake Ossipee in NH where the BU Cycling team participated in 2 full days of training. The first day consisted of two possible rides, a 95 mile ride and a 48 mile ride, both which went up a mountain in the White Mountains. All expect two members of the team that attended made it to the peak and descended with the group. On Sat night the team worked on stretching routines and injury prevention techniques.

The second day included a 22 mile loop around the lake and about half of the team participated. The previous day had been absolutely freezing so many teammates were still thawing on Sunday! Over all, it was an amazingly successful trip!

--------------------------------------

GP Gloucester Cross Race - Gloucester, MA
9/29-9/30

Cross season is in full force, and this weekend, the elements showed no mercy to the masses of cyclists who gathered in Gloucester, MA to compete in a challenging and technical course made only more difficult by the howling wind, thick mud, and frigid rain. The cyclocross discipline is one that BU Cyclists are still beginning to get involved with, and though our showing consisted of only 2 team members, both David Giraud and Lydia Hausle attacked their separate races with conviction. Equally exciting were the results of two recent BU alumni who raced the same event. Last years president, Preston Buehrer, placed 4th in his category with over 120 racers. Ian Schon, another 2012 grad, competed among international professionals in his category, and managed to hold his own quite well in this extremely competitive race. Well done, all.

Holiday Farm/Jiminy Peak MTB race weekend

We had a new member of BU cycling take on the women's A/B mountain bike field, a first in many years for BU Cycling. She represented us well, bringing BU up to 12th position in the team omnium out of 19 total schools who have competed in the season so far.

IHSA Nationals - Harrisburg, PA
Thursday 5/3/2013

Sarah Broadbent competed in the Intermediate Individual Fences class and Meghan Kaupp competed in the Open Individual Fences, in Harrisburg, PA at the Farm Show Complex for IHSA Nationals. Meghan Kaupp placed 7th in her very competitive open division!

--------------------

Community Service - Fenway Park
Sunday April 21

Almost the whole team showed up at Fenway Park yesterday to help serve the Fenway Fund. The Fenway Fund raises money mostly through their in-game 50/50 raffle efforts to donate to children organizations including Baseball for Children as well as hospitals and the Jimmy Fund. Each game the fund needs about 25 volunteers to spend the game time selling 50/50 raffle tickets. This is exactly what our team did.

Due to the recent incidences with the Boston Bombings, yesterday was a very important day for the Fenway Fund, requiring volunteers to raise money for both the 50/50 raffle as well as the One Fund organizations. The BUET passed around donation bags to each isle in the park after the team had completed selling the 50/50 raffle tickets.

We were all short of a voice when we left the park yesterday. Our volunteer work required us to yell and advertise our tickets for the whole game!

Sarah Broadbent and Emily King alone sold an abnormally high amount of tickets at 130! The park was so impressed they were offered full time positions.

The rest of the team combined probably sold over 1000 tickets!

Zone 1 Finals - South Hadley, MA

Saturday 12/1/2012

We planned this meet beginning in September, and welcomed about 100 competitors from eight different universities: BU, UVM, USM, Sacred Heart, UConn, UPenn, Temple and MIT. Also, many team members who had never competed were able to compete for the first time.

UConn Meet
Saturday 11/10/2011

We competed against UConn and Sacred Heart. We had four competitors; Jasmyn, Kim, Christina and Annie. All four did well for it being so early in the season. There were no personal best. We are excited to see both teams at our home meet on Saturday, December 1 at 2:00pm in Woburn.

Sailing

George E. Morris Trophy - Boston University
4/27 - 4/28

Saturday:
A great day of racing on the Charles River. 8 races in A division and 6 races in B division were completed. After a short delay from crew races, the first few races were sailed in shifty 4-6 knots easterly. After that we had a steady easterly with 7-10 knots for the majority of racing. The day ended with A division sailing 2 races against a very shifty Charles River south-east breeze. 2 protests were disallowed. Big thanks to BU grad Matt Johnson for running races with the help of BU undergrads Brendan Cook and Jackson Chabot.

Sunday:
After the crew shells dispersed on Sunday, it was time for the real racing to begin. 7 B and 5 A races were sailed in sporty, flat water FJ conditions. The wind peaked at around 15 knots but was blowing 6-10 knots for the majority of the day. The regatta turned into a Comm Ave rumble with BC & BU trading blows over the last 2 sets. In the end, the BU Terriers took control of the regatta in the last 2 races, and were able to win the 2013 George Morris Trophy.

Brian Doyle Open - Dartmouth University
4/27 - 4/28

Saturday, April 27:

The scenic Mascoma lake, from the Abnaki word meaning ""much grass"", ""salmon fishing"", or ""red rocks"", served as the venue for the first annual Brian Doyle Open. Brian Doyle coached the Dartmouth team for twelve years, with a one year hiatus to run an Olympic campaign in the Tornado class. He coached Dartmouth to two National Championships, and had numerous Dartmouth sailors named to the All-America team during his tenure. ""BD"", as he is affectionately known, still lives in Hanover with his family, and occasionally makes it down to practice to duel with current team members. The Dartmouth Sailing program would not be where it is today without Brian's contributions.

Saturday at the BDO began with a light northerly breeze, exceeding the expectations of the forecast for ""calm"", as a high pressure system sits over northern New England. The breeze was stable enough for two races in A division, and one in B, before the fickle wind gods reared their ugly heads. The lake glassed over just after noon, providing a picturesque reflection of Shaker Village in Enfield, but not the requisite ingredients for sailboat racing. After a lengthy delay on shore, with a few zephyrs from the south keeping our hopes alive, racing was cancelled for the day.

Sunday, April 28:

Competitors arrived to another glass-off on Mascoma this morning, until the regatta's namesake made a cameo appearance, bearing the gift of a warm southerly breeze. The wavering wind waffled through large shifts and velocity changes, at times allowing rare sightings of an elusive white cap. The varying conditions challenged all but Dartmouth's skipper Hunter Johnstone '16, sailing with crews Victor Hollenberg '14, and Evan Read '16, who constructed a perfect picket fence with 6 points in 6 races to win A division. Big Green skipper Sarah Williams '16 and crew Caroline Gray '16 capitalized on their home-field advantage to win B division, and a combined 12-point victory over the BU Terriers. Recently-installed outdoor boathouse speakers, and a good ol' charcoal grill, paired with 70 degree weather and cloudless skies, prompted visiting sailors to describe the weekend as ""the best regatta ever"".

Staake Trophy Team Race - Roger Williams, Bristol, RI
4/20/2021

On Saturday, racing took place in a light and shifty westerly. The wind was pretty fickle and we experienced some delays as the breeze sorted itself out midday. Racing started shortly after 10:30 and ended around 6:30. Two round robins were completed. The team started off the day on a good note, winning 5 out of the first 6 races, but tapered off towards the end of the day and ended up with a 7-5 record, good enough for 2nd place.

The wind did not hold up on Sunday enough to complete the 3rd round robin, so races were abandoned. The team finished 2nd place overall, which was good enough to qualify for New England Team Race Championships in 2 weekends.

Ted Ferrarone Team Race - Roger Williams University, Bristol RI
Saturday 3/30

Cameron Fraser, Alejandra Higgins, Ian Towill, Lalitha Kumaresan, Connor Astwood, and Maggie Swanson started started sailing in a light breeze coming from the WNW. In the afternoon the breeze switched, filling in from the south. Tide on Mt. Hope Bay was running out in the morning and only strengthened throughout the day, which made for a difficult cross current in many of the races. The strong current made the racing much more difficult and led the team into making some adjustments in our game plan. At the end of day 1, the team was left right in the mix, tied for 3rd place in Stanford.

On Sunday, freshman Brendan Cook joined the team, replacing captain Ian Towill, and he was able to gain some great experience at a high level team race regatta. Sunday morning began with the temperature in the low 50s, but quickly dropped to the lower 40s once a brisk southerly filled in about half way through the morning. We were able to complete the second round robin but only managed to finish half the third before racing was called for the day. The team ended up holding their position at 3rd place out of 8 teams, maintaining the tie with the Cardinals of Stanford.

----------------

BU Trophy - Boston University Sailing Pavilion
Saturday 3/30

Liz Glivinski, Joe Benoit, Lindsey Kennett, and Simon Bertocci sailed on the Charles River for the BU Trophy. Liz and Joe had two first place finishes, and Lindsey and Simon had two 5ths and several other top 10 finishes (Lindsey was skippering in her first collegiate regatta!). The team finished 7th overall.

On Sunday, the conditions were much more manageable; the breeze was light and shifty out of the north. 5 races were completed in each division.
The team finished 12th overall.

----------------

For Sunday's racing, B-division started the day off with sunny skies and 10 AM start. The northerly breeze was building throughout the day from 5 to 17 knots. A total of 9 races were completed in each division and the racing was called at 3:00 PM.

Ian Towill sailed with Lalitha Kumaresan, and Cam Fraser sailed with Alejandra Higgins, Lindsey Kennett, and Joe Benoit (in his first collegiate regatta!). BU finished in 4th place overall out of 18 teams.

This weekend, Ian Towill, Cameron Fraser, Liz Glivinski, Connor Astwood, Brendan Cook, Lalitha Kumaresan, Alejandra Higgins, and Maggie Swanson travelled down to New London for the Thames River Team Race at Connecticut College.

On Saturday, the day started out with a brisk 8-10 knot northerly but quickly shifted west. Racing for the rest of the day was slow, and there was an hour long postponement due to lack of breeze. One round robin was completed, and BU finished the day with a solid record of 6-1. On Sunday, we started with an up and down northeasterly breeze of 2-8 knots. We were less fortunate with our record, but got the opportunity to substitute in all the skippers to get everyone some experience for the first regatta of the year. We finished with an overall record of 10-4, good enough for a tie for second place.

11/3/2004

Ian Paice, Alejandra Higgins, Lalitha Kumaresan, Mike Saldi, and Cameron Fraser sailed in shifty winds and strong current in Newport harbor for the Rhode Island state championships. BU got off to a rough start, as they struggled to get used to sailing in 420s in the heavy current, conditions quite different from what they usually see on the Charles. As the weekend went on, they managed to improve slowly but surely. The weekend was highlighted by several top 5 finishes and 2 first places in races. The team finished 8th overall out of 19 teams.

Jackson and Indre started the day finishing in the middle of the fleet and by the end of the day they finished in the top 4 each of the last 3 races. The last race they used good communication and smart tactics to overtake half of the fleet on the downwind leg and maneuver into a second place finish. Overall the team finished in 4th place behing Tufts, Brown, and Northeastern on what was a successful day with the help of Billy Martin's coaching.

----------------------------------------

Moody Trophy - URI Sailing Center, Wakefield RI
10/6/2012

Conditions for collegiate sailboat racing don’t get too much better than what was had on day 1 of the 2012 Moody. We had breezes out of the south at 10-15 knots with maybe a few gusts a bit higher. The sun was out and the temperature was in the 70s. We sailed in the “Outer Pond” in close proximity to Gardner Island where the rotations took place without much carnage.

Eight races were completed in each division using windward/leeward courses with offsets and independent gates. We had a few small breakdowns that were handled in between races but none were filed. Central Series One at Tufts
9/8

1st out of 8. BU sent four freshmen to the Tufts
Central Series 1 regatta for the opening weekend
of the season. Day 1 (Saturday) consisted of winds
up to 25 knots, averaging around 17 knots throughout
the day. The BUDS placed 3rd and 6th overall, as the
divisions were combined for the races, and were in
second to Harvard by a few points at the end of a long
day.

The breeze dropped to almost zero for the second day
(Sunday), and the finishes were all over the place due
to the inconsistent breeze. With a huge appetite to win,
the BUDS pulled through into first as a team with some
top finishes.

a mast in half before the first race. The breeze picked up
throughout the day and as the races progressed so did the
skills of all the teams. Downwind legs were all very close
with many boats passing back and forth in the puffs. The
next day proved to be a bigger challenge with lighter
conditions which emphasized boathandling. After taking
3 hours to complete the last two races for a total of 9,
racing ended and teams were sent home. The BUDS finished
8th out of 9. Main competitors were Roger Williams, Cornell,
Tufts, Coast Guard Academy, Yale, Brown and others.

We sailed on Saturday in extreme conditions, with winds of
20 knots and 10-15 foot waves. BU wasn't very successful in
these conditions as they are not very similar to our beloved
Charles river. We left ourselves with a lot of ground to make
up on Sunday. On Sunday the breeze was light and shifty and
we were able to sail much better. We finished off the regatta
with two third place finishes but in the end the hole we left
ourselves in on Saturday was too deep. We ended up finishing
14th overall out of 18 teams.

A close loss to Yale in the quarterfinals knocked us out of championship contention but we rebounded from the loss with a convincing 15-6 win over WPI and an 11-8 win over a strong Brown team to seal up the fifth place finish. Overall a good tournament for BU.

We scored 4 points in the second half, patiently moving the disc and maintaining possession against MIT's zone defense. We lost to them in the end 5-13. In our final game, we played UMass Amherst and lost 15-6.

This tournament gave us encouragement that we could beat MIT, now that we know their plays. MIT has always been a of sort rival to us. If we play with the same intensity and passion as we did in that game, we can beat MIT when we see them at Sectionals.

BU v BC 3-16
BU v Wesleyan 14-10
BU vs Middlebury 7-6
BU vs Dartmouth 3-12

The team also honored fallen teammate Austin Brashears by retiring his cap in a pre-game ceremony.

---------------------------------------

CWPA Tournament #1 - Wesleyan University, Middletown, CT
09/22/12-09/23/12

Men's Water Polo finished a tough weekend at 0-4, falling to Boston College, Dartmouth College, Yale University, and Middlebury College. Though the team put a heavy emphasis on conditioning in the last few weeks, they attributes the losses to a lack of fundamentals and team work that weren't fully developed in the first two weeks of school.

Though disappointed in their overall performance, a close 9-8 loss versus Yale (who finished #2 at Nationals last year) left the squad with high hopes for the rest of it's season. The team is excited to right the ship at its upcoming home tournament in two weeks.

Women's Water Polo

Women's Water Polo Nationals - Minneapolis, MN
May 2 - 5, 2013

The team played three games over two days; two on Friday and one on Saturday. The first game was at 12:30 on Friday against a strong offensive team, University of Central Florida and we were defeated 21-4. We played a hard game against Texas A&M on Friday night at 7:30 and lost to them 16-3. Our final game was against University of California Santa Barbara on Saturday at 9:50 and they defeated us 13-3. Our last game was our best game as a team and we were all happy with how we played through out the tournament. It was a good growing experience for the team! We ended the tournament tied for 15th place. On Sunday we went back to the pool to watch the third place game and championship game and then headed over to the Mall of America before our flight home at 6:30 on Sunday night.

-----------------

Austin Brashears Invitational - FitRec Pool
Saturday and Sunday, 4/27-4/28

Our team spent quite a few hours at FitRec's pool this weekend. We played four games (three regular games and one alumni game).

The first game we played was against a Masters team headed by Liz Lacy, our head coach. The game was initially close, but Masters pulled away at the end. Final score was 9-5.
Our second game of the day was the much-anticipated alumni game. All players were very excited to reunite with and meet our alumni. Some players who returned to Boston for the game graduated last year while others were the founders of women's water polo at BU. Last year, the alums trampled the current BU team; however, we were able to win a close 10-9 game. After the game, our current players talked to the alumni about their real-people jobs, families, and the beginnings of BU Water Polo.

Our final game of the day was against cross-town rivals Boston College. Despite our tough fight, we lost the game 8-7.
On Sunday, we only had one game. The team started off slow in the battle against MIT, but we were able to bring it back and beat them. The final score was 7-3.

--------------------

North Atlantic Division Championship - New Haven, CT
4/20/2013

On Saturday the team started off the tournament and went up against Bowdoin College, starting off score with a score of 7-2. After a break, we competed with Wellesley College and came out strong with a score of 11-4. The next day we competed in the semi-finals with MIT. By the third quarter the scores were neck to neck but by the fourth quarter, we managed to score three more goals and won with 8-5.

The girls were really excited about the championship game against Yale University. It was really an intense game and Yale University came out really prepared. Unfortunately the girls won 2nd place with a final score of 11-8. But after reflecting on what we have accomplished since the beginning of the school year, everyone on the team was really proud of one another. Since Yale can't make it to nationals because their exam schedule clashes with the tournament, our team is going to nationals on May 2-5!

-------------------

Bowdoin Tournament - Brunswick, ME
Saturday and Sunday, 4/6/13-4/7/13

Our first game of the weekend was against Wellesley. This was the first time we played them in a league game. We struggled to adjust to their offensive strategy initially but managed to shut them down for most of the game. Final score 7-1, with goals from Olivia, Kelia, Shireen, Julia, and Allie.

Although we beat Bates in the first league tournament in March, we found ourselves losing to them 1-2 in the first quarter. However, our team rallied to win the game 9-5. Our team had quite a few steals in this game. Points scored by Elizabeth, Julia, Olivia, Kelia, and Lia (she played in the field and the goal in this game).

As predicted, Yale was our toughest game. By the end of the first quarter, we trailed Yale 1-4. A great pep talk in between quarters bolstered our team and we ended the first half 4-4. With a few key goals and awesome blocks by our goalie, we closed the game 8-5. Goals by Shireen, Allie, Julia, and Olivia.

Our last game of the tournament was a rough one. The previous three matches wore us out, so we didn't play as well as we would have preferred. We were losing to Bowdoin, a team we had defeated in the previous tourney, for a good portion of the game. However, we fought until the end and pulled ahead in the last two minutes of the game. We also gave our coach a bit of a heart attack (just kidding; she's fine). We won the game 5-4.

This tournament concludes the regular season of the North Atlantic Division. Our team is seeded first for the league championships in two weeks at Yale University. To our knowledge, we are the first BU water polo team to go undefeated in regular season. We're so excited to be doing so well, particularly because this was supposed to be a ""rebuilding year"" for our team after losing so many players.

Joint Practice with BC - FitRec Pool
Monday 4/1/13

BU Women's Water Polo ran a joint practice with BC to prepare for upcoming tournaments in our respective leagues. We warmed up separately and then ran a few half court drills working on 6-on-5 plays. Since both teams are pretty speedy, we worked on our counter attacks through various drills. We gave BC some of our players to balance the teams and scrimmaged for the last 20 minutes of practice. The attitude and energy at practice was much improved from previous practices and this joint practice helped bridge the rivalry gap between BC and BU.

------------------------

Round Robin with BC and NEU - BU FitRec pool
Sunday 3/24/13

We didn't play as well as we would have liked in this tourney. We lost both of our games (12-8 Northeastern vs. BU and 9-3 BC vs. BU). BC and NEU both enjoyed the tourney, though, and we would like to host similar events in the future.

Spring Break Training Trip - Hawaii
3/9/13-3/17/13

Here's a run-down of our week:

3/9: We met at 5am for our flight to LAX. During our six hour layover at LAX, we split into groups and explored the airport. We left LA at 5pm and arrived in Honolulu at 9pm local time. Since everyone was exhausted, we split the team up and went home to sleep.

3/10: The first full day on 'Oahu was particularly rainy, which cancelled our plan to travel to the North Shore. Instead, we ran errands, went to the grocery store, and shopped at a few malls. We ate dinner at a buffet at the Sheraton Waikiki with some live entertainment.

3/11: Our first practice was at Ala Moana Beach and Magic Island. We ran and did core work before our 2,000 meter swim in the ocean. Rough water swimming was a nice change from our typical pool swims. After the swim, we ate breakfast at a cafe where some girls tried their first acai bowls (hopefully you'll see a picture of this bowl of deliciousness when my teammates submit their pictures). We drove around for a good portion of the remainder of the day and stopped at several beaches.

3/12: We hiked to Maunawili Falls in the morning. All of our players who went for a swim jumped from one of the falls into the basin below (don't worry, we checked for rocks beforehand). We ate lunch at Kelia's grandparents house and then headed to Kailua for our first game against Le Jardin Academy. We split into two groups (more experienced and less experienced players) and scrimmaged Le Jardin's teams. It was the first time some of the girls had played in an outdoor pool.

3/13: We swam in the morning at Kaimana Beach (essentially Waikiki Beach but less crowded and cleaner water). Before our swim, we played tag to warm up. We then had a few relay races. After our swim, the team split up to hang out on the beach and explore Waikiki. We played Kamehameha School's varsity team in the afternoon at Kaimuki High School. We were slightly tired from our earlier activities and it showed in the game.

3/14: Our most memorable morning workout was hiking to the top of the Koko Head trail. The trail essentially consists of 1,048 stairs and a steep incline. A few girls were able to (kind of) conquer their fear of heights while ascending to the top of Koko Head. Despite the physical, mental, and emotional difficulties, everyone on our team reached the top and was able to enjoy the great views. In the afternoon, we played Shireen and Kelia's alma mater, 'Iolani School. We broke into two groups for these scrimmages so that everyone had a lot of playing time. It was great playing former teammates and seeing how much they had grown and improved as both players and young ladies over the past two years.

3/15: On our last full day on the island, we had another morning beach practice. We did core work and played beach polo on the sand at Makapu'u. After our beach polo game, we played a number of games in the water. Unfortunately, we were unable to obtain tickets to see Pearl Harbor. Instead, we had a nice study period. At night, we played Mililani High School, whose head coach had coached Shireen and Kelia four years ago.

3/16: We didn't hold a morning practice today since the team needed their rest. We went to a farmer's market at Kapiolani Community College in the morning and spent the rest of the day at the beach. Shireen's parents prepared a really nice dinner for the team. We left Honolulu at 10:15pm local time.

3/17: We landed in LAX at 6:05am PST. After our two hour layover, we were on our way back to Boston! We arrived at 5:30pm EST.

North Atlantic Division Tournament at Bates College
3/2-3/3/13

This season, our team switched from the New England Division to the North Atlantic Division. Only Lia, our starting goalie, had played in this league previously. She was also the only one who had played Bates or Bowdoin. As a whole, our team did not know what to expect.

We came out strong in our first game against Bowdoin, which we won 14-8. A good portion of our team scored in this game, including freshman Olivia Wade with a whopping four goals. Our second game against Yale was set to be our toughest game. Every girl fought hard for every goal scored and worked to defend every possession Yale had. We were the top dogs of this game with final score 11-7. By the third game against Bates, all of us were extremely tired. We pushed through the exhaustion and defeated the Bobcats 10-3. Debbie Wong scored her first goals back-to-back in this game. The last match of the tourney against MIT proved to be a tough one. We felt the previous three games weighing on us during this game, but still managed to come out on top. After debate between the referees, desk workers, and coaches, the final score was 6-4.

This was the first weekend in the past year and a half (possibly longer) that a BU water polo team went 4-0 in a tournament. Our team was thrilled to break the ""BU Curse"" and have a great start to our season. However, we will continue to work hard until our next tourney (April 6-7 at Bowdoin College).

Players who scored this tournament: Lia Breunig (in a buzzer-beating shot from the goal), Elizabeth Rubel, Julia Ardila, Debbie Wong, Allie DeLillo, Kelia Cowan, Olivia Wade, Shireen Kheradpey.

St. Francis Tournament - Brooklyn, NY
Saturday and Sunday, 2/16/13-2/17/13

We played three games over the course of the weekend against Iona College, Cornell University, and New York Athletic Club (NYAC). Iona and NYAC were well above the caliber of play that our team had grown accustomed to in the fall semester. Although those losses were great, we luckily will not be playing similar teams in our league.

We had played Iona two weekends prior in the Harvard Tournament, so we knew we were in for a rough game. Despite the score (20-2), I thought we played well as a team. Although we had a slow start (the score of the first quarter was 8-0 Iona), we picked up the pace in the back half of the game.
Cornell was our closest game. We lost 8-9 in the last few moments of the game. Cornell was a team that should be on a similar level to the teams we will be playing within our league.
NYAC didn't have sufficient players, so we loaned them so of ours. This last game of the tourney ended up being more of a scrimmage.

Top performances by Elizabeth Rubel, Olivia Wade, Julia Ardila, and Shireen Kheradpey. Freshman Allie ""Sunshine"" DeLillo scored her first fours goals throughout the tournament. Our goalies, Lia Breunig and Bridget Eastes, did a stunning job protecting our cages throughout the onslaught of other teams."

Harvard Tournament
Saturday 2/2/13

This was the first time the majority of our team had played a varsity team in water polo. In fact, about half of our team had not played water polo six months ago. Heading in to the game against Iona, we had very low expectations. However, I thought we played very well. We did our best to play up to their level and didn't give up during the game. In all honesty, they stopped running their counterattack after the first quarter and started using their left hand. Playing at a level so much higher than we're used to was a great experience. The final score was 11-2, but we had our own little victories along the way. Katrina Lyter, a senior who just joined the team this semester, put BU on the scoreboard. Our goalies, Lia Breunig and Bridget Eastes, both had some great saves. Some of our new players, including Cat Xenakis, took a few nice shots from outside. I scored our second goal on an outside shot from point.
Granted, we still have a lot to work on. We need to focus on safe passes, protecting the ball, and coming back on defense. We'll be playing Iona again in two weeks at our St. Francis Tournament in Brooklyn Heights.

Scrimmage vs. BC
Friday 2/1/13

11-4 BC. Our team wasn't expecting BC to come out so strong. With a few key players missing or sick, we didn't do as well as we would have hoped. After four quarters, we ran a joint practice and focused on man-up/man-down situations. We look forward to playing them again on Sunday.

Scrimmage vs. MIT
Sunday 12/2/12

We defeated MIT 9-6. We had a nice variety of girls scoring points. Olivia (our freshman set player) and Julia (our senior team captain) scored the most goals. Our movement on offense has improved significantly. Defensively, we had a few mistakes in the first quarter but we tightened that up for the final three quarters. Overall, we played a good game.

Scrimmage vs. Northeastern
Wednesday 11/7/12

The women's water polo team hosted a scrimmage against the Northeastern women's water polo team, which is a relatively new team. Even though we lost the scrimmage, we gained many benefits. Some of those benefits are that our new players gained more playing experience, our team gained experience on how to play together as a team, and our team learned what we need to work on in practice before our season next semester.

Scrimmage vs. MIT
Friday 10/26/12

We scrimmaged against MIT in the Alumni Pool. Since the scrimmage was not in the pool that MIT normally practices in, the pool was not exactly set up for a game situation, so we played without a game clock and no score was kept. Jeremy Butz (our assistant coach) refereed the game. This was our third scrimmage of the season. Our team has continued to improve, but we have much to work on. Although our defense was strong, we didn't have much of an offense. We also struggled to make safe passes and to protect the ball. We look forward to playing BC on Sunday.

Joint Practice with Wellesley
Sunday 10/14/2012

The Women's Water Polo Team held a joint practice with the Wellesley water polo team. Both teams have quite a few new players who have never played before. For this practice we wanted to be able to have game experience for our new players, that was not as intense as a regular league game. We were able to play with Wellesley in a full scrimmage and able to stop the game when necessary to explain the plays that should happen in the situations. Because this was a laid back type of scrimmage, we did not keep score. However, everyone on both teams were able to learn something new.

Scrimmage vs. MIT - Boston University FitRec
9/30/2012

We held this scrimmage in order for our new players to gain some experience in an actual game. The scrimmage against MIT went well. We won 11-7. However, that score was not what mattered in this game. What mattered was that our girls gain experience and for our team to learn to play together. Our team did very well in both aspects and everyone learned a lot.
